‘Don’t belong’: Geraldine Hickey’s tears over tragic confession

One of Australia’s most beloved comedians fought back tears as she revealed her harrowing personal journey.

Geraldine Hickey 'went back in the closet' after difficult experience in a gay bar

I’m A Celebrity star Geraldine Hickey has opened up about the time she forced herself back into the closet.

Hickey, who was raised in a Catholic family, breaks down during tonight’s episode as she confesses that she decided to reject her sexuality after a harrowing experience in a gay bar.

After realising she was a lesbian, Hickey decided she would visit a bar in the hopes of meeting other women just like her who would make her feel welcome.

However, Hickey says the experience left her feeling broken and like she “didn’t belong”.

“I went to a lesbian bar. I walked into that bar thinking everyone would be like, at least someone would go ‘hey welcome’. And I walked in and it’s just like I’m in a lesbian bar and people look you up and down and ignore you,” she explained, as she began to cry.

“I felt horrible. If I feel shit in here that means I don’t belong, if I don’t belong in a lesbian bar then I’m not a lesbian. I felt like I didn’t belong. All anyone wants to do is belong. Mum and dad are quite conservative.”

As a result of her experience, Hickey decided that it would be best to try and force herself to be heterosexual.

“So I just went back into the closet and told them I love men. I was young and didn’t know. It was really, I questioned everything about myself.”

Meanwhile, it’s been an emotional time in camp for the stars over the last few days.

Beloved Aussie reality TV star Reggie Sorenson reduced her I’m A Celebrity campmate Matt “Matty J” Johnson to tears with a heartbreaking confession about her health earlier this week.

The Big Brother Australia winner, 50, has previously revealed she is legally blind due to having a rare degenerative eye disease. In 2022, she was also diagnosed with stage two Usher Syndrome, which impacts vision and causes hearing loss.

When Johnson asked her what she will “miss most” upon losing her vision completely, her response saw him become visibly emotional.

“Seeing the kids, I think,” she told him. “I’ll miss the kids.

“I never know if it is my last day of when I will see again. That day is going to come, and that is why I am so blessed to be here, to enjoy and see all of this stuff and chuck it in the memory bank, to make the most of it.”
