Cameras have started rolling on the second season of the smash-hit Foxtel comedy drama Upright.

Award-winning actor, musician, comedian, actor and writer Tim Minchin and rising Aussie actor Milly Alcock – who has just wrapped filming on Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragons – reprise their roles as Lucky and Meg.

The misfit duo set off another uniquely Australian road trip – this time with their sights set for Far North Queensland.

Minchin was rapt his critically acclaimed comedy was given the green light for a second season but admits he was originally slightly sceptical at going again.

“I didn’t just want to do it because it’s a program to keep making,” he said.

“I only wanted to do it if we could think of a really fantastic adventure with all the emotional layers of the first one.”

Fortunately Minchin and the production team did come up with “something wicked again” and the eight-part second season will see multi-award winning actor and writer Mirrah Foulkes come on board as director for the second instalment.

“I am very happy to be returning to Queensland to direct the second season of Upright,” Foulkes said.

“It’s great to be involved in this wonderful local series and to be working with an exceptional Queensland crew, the glorious Milly Allcock and Tim Minchin and our passionate partners at Foxtel.”

The series will take viewers on a journey from Brisbane to the Far North, with the scenery and diverse landscapes providing the ultimate backdrop. Minchin said the other character in season 1 was the Outback.

“This time we’ll be filming in much greener climes, but we’re going to try and still really focus on how we shoot Australia and how we depict the landscape in its literal and metaphorical glory,” Minchin said.

“Upright season 1 was bathed in desolate atmosphere and it really helped the viewer understand the challenges (Lucky and Meg) were having. I think you can do the same thing down the river into the jungle.”

The hugely successful first season of Upright premiered to rave reviews in Australia and overseas and took out the key comedy categories at the 2020 AACTA Awards, winning Best Comedy Series, while Tim Minchin won Best Comedy Performer.

The first series of Upright is available for streaming on Foxtel now.
