All the action from the 2017 Golden Globe Awards in Hollywood
RECAP: There were plenty of upsets as Jimmy Fallon fell flat, Meryl Streep slammed Donald Trump, Tom Hiddleston took an unexpected gong and best film went to an outsider.
THERE were plenty of upsets at this year’s Golden Globe Awards as as Jimmy Fallon fell flat as host, a teary Meryl Streep slammed Donald Trump, and the gong for best film went to an outsider.
Streep, the Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree had the night’s most striking moment: a rebuke to Trump that stirred the crowd. She called the president-elect’s mocking of a disabled reporter the year’s performance that most “stunned her.” “Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners and if you kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts,” Streep said to loud applause. She spoke out against hate, bigotry, and in favour of the need for the freedom of the press to be protected. Viewers also couldn’t get over when they noticed Ryan Reynolds kissing Andrew Garfield. As Ryan Gosling accepted his award for Best performance by and Actor in a Motion Picture for La La Land, Reynolds and Garfield — aka Deadpool and SpiderMan —were locking lips infront of their partners Blake Lively and Emma Stone. The footage went viral on Twitter. Though La La Land dominated with seven awards, including best motion picture, comedy or musical, the night’s final award went to Barry Jenkins’ tender coming of age drama Moonlight. Its sole award was for best motion picture, drama. And the Brits were a strong force to reckon with as Tom Hiddleston surprisingly won for his role in The Night Manager. This year, the Golden Globes got off to a rocky start, with a broken teleprompter initially stalling host Jimmy Fallon, who still managed to start the show with a singing-and-dancing ode to La La Land and a steady diet of Donald Trump jokes. “Cut to Justin Timberlake, please,” implored a desperate Fallon as he improvised while another teleprompter was brought in.
