Unmasked singer Sophie Monk has wished her former Bardot bandmates “all the best” after Tiffani Wood criticised her for not taking part in a 2020 reunion tour.
As Monk was revealed as the Dragonfly on Channel 10’s The Masked Singer on Monday, former Bardot singer Wood hit Instagram on Tuesday to say: “I thought Sophie was too busy for a Bardot reunion. I mean … she’s wearing a dragonfly costume, singing on a stage.”
Bardot, a five-member girl band discovered on the reality show Popstars between 1999 and 2001, planned reunion shows this year, but Monk declined to be involved.
Responding to Wood’s now-deleted post, Monk told Confidential: “For me, honestly, I want to do a different sound. I haven’t spoken to the girls for 18 years. But I wish them all the best.
“It’s 20 years ago. I’ve grown a lot and I’m just doing different things. I’m lucky I averagely do a little bit of everything.”
Monk said her stint on the Masked Singer marked the first time she’s sung in public since 2003.
She said her early experiences in the music industry “took the love away” from singing.
“I wanted to have fun. Entertainment should be a fun experience, and behind the scenes, it wasn’t. But I don’t want to be too specific, and (put) people down.
“I went, ‘That’s it for me, I’m good, thanks.’ So I tried acting, and didn’t do it too well, but I was OK. Then did a bit of hosting and modelling. I just love entertaining people all round.
“But (The Masked Singer) did bring my love (of singing) back, for sure.”
The popular TV personality said she did the show because she wouldn’t be judged as Sophie Monk.
“It’s like being a little kid again, with no inhibitions. You were not getting judged as you, they were just judging the dragonfly. It was the perfect way for me to sing again.”
With strict security measures in place to protect the identities of singers, Monk suspects she revealed herself to production crew and talent early on.
“I can’t stop talking and everyone recognises my voice,” she said. “They’re like, ‘Dragonfly, shut up! It was very tricky to keep quiet because I love a chat.”
