Sophia Loren has emergency surgery after falling at Swiss home

Sophia Loren, 89, has been hospitalised after suffering a fall in her bathroom and sustaining multiple fractures requiring emergency surgery.

Sophia Loren has undergone emergency surgery after a fall at her home.

The Italian film icon, 89, was left with multiple fractures to her hip and leg after falling at her home in Geneva, Switzerland, over the weekend.

The incident occurred in the bathroom of her residence. She suffered several fractures, including a serious break to her femur and hip, the New York Post reports.

Loren’s condition was also revealed via her Instagram page for her restaurant chain on Sunday.

“A fall at her home in Geneva today caused Ms Loren hip fractures. Operated with a positive outcome, she will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation,” read the post.

The beloved actress most recently appeared in Netflix’s The Life Ahead in 2020.

She was set to open a fourth restaurant in the Italian city of Bari on September 26, and just celebrated a birthday on September 20.

“Thankfully everything worked out for the best and the Lady will be back with us very soon. The whole team at Sophia Loren Restaurant takes this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery. #sophialoren @sophialorenrestaurant.”

Loren’s sons Carlo Jr., 54, and Edoardo, 50, have been by her side during the ordeal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
