Sir Elton John shocked fans at the premiere of his new musical, after admitting he had “lost [his] eyesight” and hadn’t even been able to watch the performance.
The music legend, 77, appeared on stage at The Devil Wears Prada in London, but left early - and had to be led out of the Dominion Theatre by his husband, David Furnish.
“As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight,” John told the audience at the event, which was also a charity gala for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
“I haven’t been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed it.
“To my husband who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews...
“It’s hard for me to see it but I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight. Thank you for coming!”
The Crododile Rock singer wrote the music for the highly-anticipated new musical, which premiered in London’s famed Wesr End on Sunday night.
John previously opened up about his condition, which occurred after he contracted an infection in recent months.
“I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France,” he told Good Morning America.
The superstar added: “It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see. My left eye is not the greatest.
“It’s been a while since I’ve done anything. I just have to get off my backside.”
The father-of-two admitted that his loss of vision had - understandably - really rattled him.
“It kind of floored me, and I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything,” he said.
“There’s hope and encouragement that it will be okay. But I’m kind of stuck in the moment, going into the studio and recording, I don’t know. Because I can’t see a lyric for start.”
The Devil Wears Prada is based on the blockbuster 2006 film, starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, and the best-selling novel by Lauren Weisberger.
It tells the story of aspiring journalist Andy - who bags a dream internship at a fashion magazine, only to be put at the mercy of terrifying editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly - said to have been based on iconic US Vogue head, Anna Wintour.
Wintour was among the many celebrities who turned out for Sunday’s gala - with Emily in Paris actress Lily Collins, British talk show star Graham Norton, Liz Hurley and Donatella Versace also spotted on the red carpet.
The musical stars Vanessa Williams as editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, Miranda Priestly, while Georgie Buckland plays Hathaway’s role as her assistant, Andy Sachs.
