Spin king Shane Warne is offering buyers a million-dollar discount on his elaborate Brighton mansion, after it failed to sell at a private auction.

Negotiations were still underway for the cricket great’s incredible home at 15 Newbay Crescent, which passed in for $5.65m.

Three bidders competed for the ritzy property around Warne’s huge pool, but their bids tapered off before even reaching the $5.8-$6.38m price guide.

JP Dixon director Jonathan Dixon said the sports star was determined to sell and would now accept offers above $5.8m — seven figures less than when he first listed in March for $6.8-$7.4m. It’s also understood he was seeking up to $8m in an off-market deal in 2019.

“It’s always nice to knock these off under the hammer but it’s been a bit tricky because we had somebody in London who was interested,” Mr Dixon said.

Warne listened into the auction from his glamorous bedroom upstairs, while former St Kilda captain Aaron Hamill and Warne’s parents Keith and Bridgette Warne also watched on.

His latest asking price is only slightly more than the $5.4m he paid in 2018, before he undertook expensive renovations that added a nightclub-themed basement, cinema and wine cellar.

Mr Dixon said coronavirus restrictions forced him to cancel an April auction and the cricketer was cautious about having buyers through his spectacular house during the pandemic.

Warne also travelled to the UK for the English cricket season followed by two weeks in hotel quarantine.

During Melbourne’s lockdown, he took Fox Footy Live on a tour of the luxury five-bedroom listing — which was previously owned by Essendon great Matthew Lloyd — showing off a golf simulator and noise-activated mirror ball.

“I am very, very lucky and grateful for my life and I travel a lot,” Warne said on the show.

“To have isolation is actually quite nice to just be at home for a while.

“But it’s unfortunate to be at home in this tough time. I’m pretty lucky, I have got a pretty cool pad that’s nice to hang out in.”

Warne had shared the magnificent mansion with son Jackson Warne, but it’s understood he plans to move into a luxury apartment in the Saint Moritz development in St Kilda. It’s believed controversial football personality Sam Newman will be one of his neighbours.

Prolific property deals have been done by the sports star in recent years, including the sale of two other Brighton pads: one at 32 Middle Crescent for $18,888,888 two years ago and another $10m residence at 6 William Street which he shared with actor Elizabeth Hurley.

Warne was contacted for comment after the auction.
