Robbie Williams has slipped quietly into Melbourne to start work on his biopic Better Man.

The British pop star and former Take That singer, arrived in town from his home in LA on April 15, and will stay in Melbourne until the first week of May.

He is performing shows at Rod Laver Arena on April 30 and May 1, which will be used in the film.

Better Man, helmed by Australian writer and director Michael Gracey, is being shot at Docklands Studios, and various locations around Melbourne.

Williams has been low key since slipping into town, rarely venturing from his villa at Crown Towers during down time.

Better Man will follow Williams’ rise from working class roots to stadium-filling stardom, and highs and lows along the journey.

Gracey directed the Hugh Jackman blockbuster The Greatest Showman, and served as executive producer on the Elton John biopic Rocketman.

Details about casting, particularly who will play Williams, are sketchy. However, given he is performing shows in Melbourne specifically for the biopic, Williams may in fact play himself, with a little help from de-ageing technology.

“I want to do the warts and all,” Williams told the Herald Sun last month. “I am not scared to portray myself with the human characteristics that some would see as villainous. But hopefully the overarching storyline will explain who I am and what I am and why I am.”

Better Man will inject $107m into the state economy, and create 2200 local jobs, and include a call out for 2700 extras for crowd and concert scenes.
