Review: Lenny Kravitz proved why he’s untouchable with raw talent and undeniable sensuality at rain-soaked Mildura show

Torrential rain threatened to ruin Lenny Kravitz's first Mildura concert — but the rockstar's charisma turned the weather curse into pure blessing for thousands of fans, writes Grace Baldwin.

Lenny Kravitz has been winning fans for a long time. It’s not surprising why or how — he is the consummate rockstar. Charismatic, talented, and enough to take everyone’s breath away.

By the time his iconic silhouette emerged from blue-lit fog at the Mildura Sporting Precinct, it had been bucketing down for several hours. The crowd was drowning.

But the moment Kravitz swaggered up to the mic, the dreary weather felt more like the kind of rain Toto sings about in Africa. Kravitz’s aura turned the curse into a blessing.

He opened with a blistering rendition of Bring It On, complete with pyro flames, smoke and a stunning light show illuminating the stage. Impressively, his band boasted as much charm and allure as their frontman.

The combination made for a stage overwhelmed by eye-watering talent and undeniable sensuality.

“We are here, first time!” Kravitz crooned to the adoring audience between songs.

“I wanna thank you for having us, I wanna thank you for your beautiful welcome — I’ve been walking around for the last two days in your town and I love it.

“I hear it never rains here,” he joked. “It’s okay, this is good for your grass and trees.”

For a man who had never visited Mildura before — after all, how many world class rockstars have — Kravitz had a warming knack for reading the room and understanding the audience.

When a performer is able to tap into the spirit of a crowd the way Kravitz can, something truly special happens. Something religious. It becomes more than music — it creates connection, raw and authentic.

Somehow, in a crowd of thousands, everybody left the show feeling as though they had shared some kind of intimate moment with him.

Proving his status as a maestro, Kravitz spent the set swapping between a plethora of bass guitars, electric guitars and acoustic guitars.

Between verses he was comfortable shredding out face-melting solos on either the bass or the guitar, while also offering breathing space for the band to have their moments to shine.

They all had their time in the sun, locking in with each other to lay down the groove from the first song to the last.

Despite having to cut the show several songs short due to the weather, Kravitz still smashed out the biggest hits, including American Woman, Fly Away and It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over.

It would be remiss to call his classics crowd-pleasers — that would imply there were songs that didn’t hit that same mark.

Bringing the concert home, the band launched into a soulful, triumphant, choral rendition of Let Love Rule.

The song pulsed and moved through the audience, the studding bass grounding everyone down to the moment. Kravitz moved around the stage with the ease and magnetism of somebody who knows who they truly are.

His concert brought class, enigma, heart, soul, funk and rock n roll to Mildura.

Kravitz gave regional Victoria a gift on Friday night, passing onto the audience something as precious and powerful as lightning.
