An Aussie radio star has detailed his awkward face-to-face chat with Troye Sivan, saying “it was the worst interview of my life”.

Mitch Churi, who can be heard on KIIS FM’s The Night Show and The Pick Up, told news.com.au that he was beside himself when he landed an in-studio chat with Sivan back in September.

Why was he so excited? Because he had a small crush on the Rush singer.

“He’s my dream man,” Churi said. “And I’m newly single, I’ve lost 40 kgs, and I’m interviewing the king twink himself, Troye Sivan.

“I was like, this is fantastic!”

Churi put on “fancy perfume” for the interview and set the studio temperature to a cool 16 degrees to combat any nervous sweating.

But Churi got flustered from the outset, and kicked off the interview with a mundane question about Sivan’s preferred coffee order.

“In his latest album, Something to Give Each Other, Troye is singing about glory holes and having random sex on a Euro trip, and here I am asking, ‘are you a flat white or an almond piccolo?’” Churi chuckled.

“His face was like, ‘why are you asking me this?’”

As panic quickly set in, Churi decided to tell a story about a recent trip to Melbourne where he’d visited the pop-up store for Tsu Lange Yor, a line of luxury homewares and fragrances by Troye Sivan and his brother, Steele Mellet.

“I bought some of his soothing sassafras essential oil and dabbed it on my wrist when I went out clubbing in Melbourne, and I picked up!” the radio host told news.com.au.

“I thought, this is a great story, Troye will love this.”

He was wrong.

“He gave me nothing!” Churi laughed.

“He just stared straight through me, and the only word he said after I told him the story was ‘slay,’ which in the gay world means, ‘you’re never touching me, don’t look at me again.’

“After that story I got the wind up from his PR team to end the interview,” the KIIS FM personality said.

But the pain wasn’t over.

“The worst part is, when I asked him for a photo afterwards, he went, ‘quickly’.

“I was like, ‘what do you mean? It’s a photo, of course it’s going to be quick!’”

After that forgettable interview, Churi was hoping to make a better impression on Sivan at the ARIAs in Sydney.

Once again, he struck out.

Churi had prime position on the ARIAs red carpet where he was interviewing all the biggest stars for KIIS FM, but the biggest name on the night, Troye Sivan, chose not to stop for a chat.

“We made direct eye contact and I could almost see his lips mouth the words, ‘not that sweaty boy from the interview,’” Churi laughed.

“He took one step forward and immediately pivoted on his Prada boot and then went straight down the carpet and avoided me.

“It was so bad!” he said.

Churi blames himself for both awkward encounters and on the off-chance Sivan ever reads this, the radio host wanted to say: “I’m sorry. I know it wasn’t you. It was me. I’m new to being gay and single and I promise I’ll be better next time.”

If there is a next time …

Mitch Churi can be heard on KIIS FM’s The Pick Up from 3-4pm weekdays and The Night Show from 7-10pm weeknights
