Decorated Gold Coast ironwoman Courtney Hancock and her former pro cricketer husband Nick Buchanan have welcomed the arrival of their first child.

The delighted couple took to Instagram on Monday to announced they had given birth to a little boy called Bobby.

“Welcome to the world our greatest achievement,” they posted with a pic of the little fellow.

Hancock and Buchanan told The Courier-Mail last year they did not know their baby’s gender and didn’t want to find out.

“It’s going to be a surprise, we’re not too sure what (gender),” Hancock said.

“We’ve had lots of people guessing but we’re going to wait. We always wanted that. Names, we have no idea – we’re just enjoying the journey and it’s been beautiful so far.”

Buchanan, 33, who played for the Brisbane Heat and is the son of former Australian Test coach John Buchanan, said: “We don’t care if it’s a boy or girl, just healthy and happy.”

Baby Bobby will expand the Hancock-Buchanan family from three to four, with the couple also proud “parents” to a field golden retriever named Bambi.

Hancock, 36, who won the gruelling Coolangatta Gold a record four times along with two Australian ironwoman titles, stepped back from the sport at the end of 2023 after almost two decades of competing.

She landed gigs coaching at Tallebudgera Surf Club and commentating on the Iron Series before falling pregnant earlier this year.

“I was nervous (about whether she would easily fall pregnant) because I’d pushed my body for an extremely long time,” she said.

“Every woman in the world has that fear – is it going to be a struggle? – but we were really lucky. We just feel really blessed and grateful because so many couples do it so tough.

“Babies are purely a miracle.”

Hancock and Buchanan both come from big families – she has three sisters and he is one of five siblings – and won’t rule out having their own “tribe”.

But they’re taking it one baby at a time.

“You hope and pray for one, that everything goes smoothly and then see how it goes,” Hancock said.

“Like all new parents, you’re not too sure what you’re diving into.”
