Thousands of listeners have expressed their anger as one of Triple M’s best-loved shows was axed this week, a day after mysteriously disappearing.

Listeners are fuming at the news Triple M has axed longrunning late-night show Night Shift, and along with it, presenter Luke Bona.

The show broadcast for the final time overnight, following a confusing few days for listeners that saw Bona and the team warn their fans not to “freak out” that they weren’t on-air on Wednesday.

“No show this evening, so please don’t freak out if you hear just music playing,” read a Wednesday post to the show’s official Facebook page.

The next day came a sad update – the show was officially cancelled, and Thursday night’s episode would be their last.

Addressing the message to their “Night Shift Family,” Bona and producer Thomas Denham wrote:

“It’s with a heavy heart that we share the Night Shift will be coming to a close this week, but management have graciously given us the chance for one last hurrah.

“For the last time from midnight ‘til sparrow’s fart across seventy-something transmitters, we will do our best to entertain and keep you company.

“If you’re a member of the family, we would love to hear from you so we get the chance to say farewell.”

The team posed for one last photo together posted to socials last night ahead of the final show.

Viewers expressed their shock and anger at the show’s sudden axing.

The post announcing the end of the show has now attracted more than 2,600 comments. A sample of the top-rated responses:

“This is without question the dumbest decision made in radio for a long long time, and trust me, I’ve seen a lot of them.”

“This is bulls**t, all of us night shift workers love the talks, hitting the big topics most media wont cover and real life, raw and honest people.”

“It’s only worth listening to triple m in the graveyard hours … Want to cut costs, get rid of the idiots in the afternoon.”

“I hope Triple M read these comments. Won’t be listening to them anymore.”

“Probably the worst decision MMM has ever made.”

“Guess Triple M don’t value their audience.”

Bona posted a short response to the comments, writing that “the support Thomas and I have received today has been overwhelming.”

The Night Shift’s axing comes amid a flurry of headline-making exits across Triple M. In September last year, Triple M’s Adelaide drivetime radio hosts were left reeling after the station axed their program – despite it rating first in its timeslot.

Two months later, NRL legend Mark ‘MG’ Geyer was sensationally axed from his Triple M breakfast radio show.

State-based afternoon drivetime shows in Queensland and NSW were also axed at the end of 2024.
