A $35,000 dress that took five years for Melbourne haute couture label Claudia Savage to hand stitch was stolen during a Hollywood fashion shoot this week.
Claudia Savage founder and avant-garde designer Natalie Hutton has been in floods, crying “ugly tears” after being told the dress had been stolen.
The hand stitched metallic garment was to appear in Netflix series, Lucifer, and was in the care of an LA-based fashion agency.
It was lent to a stylist for Hollywood celebrity photographer Ellen von Unwerth to use in a fashion shoot. It was stolen after being left in a car.
“Hundreds of hours went into this piece, all those metallic scales were hand painted cut and wired, I’ll never be able to replicate it,” Hutton told Page 13.

“Sadly, designers are at the mercy of stylists and larger markets overseas. We hand over large chunks of responsibility and financial elements and are at risk.
“It’s a double-edged sword for small businesses like myself. You jump at the chance to see your work in the pages of Vogue and for exposure. We need to eat, but at what price?”
Priceless.
