Page 13: Gillon, Hamish McLachlan to the rescue at Royal Mail Hotel

The chatter around Flemington this week was that famous brothers Gillon and Hamish McLachlan were going to save their local pub, Birregurra’s Royal Mail Hotel, from last drinks by buying in.

Thirsty locals facing the call for last drinks at Birregurra’s Royal Mail Hotel tomorrow night will instead raise a few frothies to Gillon and Hamish McLachlan.

The chatter around Flemington was that the famous brothers were going to save their local pub by buying in.

AFL boss Gillon has a property just out of town.

“The pub’s just out the gate and down the road,” Page 13 was told, but like our Cup Week tips, the pub talk wasn’t quite on the money. There will be a few days without a drink.

Page 13 went to long-term landlord Stirling McGregor to get the right mail. He confirms the pub will soon have a new licensee.

The McLachlans, not to mention 3AW’s Ross Stevenson, have saved the day.

The brothers were at the Kennedy marquee on Oaks Day and said they were “desperate to get the pub firing”.

They like to call in for a couple after the local footy team plays.

Dan Hunter, of Australia’s top rural restaurant Brae, was approached to turn it into something similar to his restaurant at Dunkeld’s Royal Mail Hotel. But Hunter has too many pots on the stove, so other heavyweights in the McLachlans’ black book were checked out.

McGregor wasn’t giving up the name of the new tenant just yet, but seems happy.

The pub will be back up in the next week or so.
