Page 13: Cricket Australia security manager quits after ‘dust-up’

As if Cricket Australia hasn’t had enough no-balls to worry about in the past 12 months, a ‘dust-up’ after its end-of-season function has coincided with the resignation of its security manager.

A dust-up after Cricket Australia’s end-of-season function has coincided with the resignation of its security manager.

As if it hasn’t had enough no-balls to worry about in the past 12 months.

The end-of-season knees up at South Melbourne’s Half Acre opened at a cracking pace.

Cricket Australia is putting more spin on the “altercation”, as they refer to it, as Shane Warne at his best.

Page 13 understands it happened when the stragglers peeled off after the party to keep partying on.

Whispers of an altercation between Cricket Australia security manager Tony Ross and a junior staffer went around headquarters at Jolimont.

Ross is a well-liked former Victoria Police detective who has been under contract at CA for more than eight years.

He pulled up stumps at Cricket Australia not long after the altercation.

Page 13 asked Ross if his resignation had anything to do with what happened.

He assured us it didn’t.

“There was no incident,” Ross told us. “There was no incident of violence.”

He said later, “It was a verbal altercation and that’s it. I don’t wish to make a comment about it.”

An internal email, seen by Page 13, was sent around senior management at Cricket Australia praising Ross’s tenure.

“Tony started as a contractor at Cricket Australia eight years ago and became a full-time employee last year.

“In that time he made the venue security and crowd management portfolio his own, ensuring that CA was leading the way in venue security management,” the email read.

“As well as what he has delivered in his demanding role, Tony has been a very popular member of staff whose opinion was always sought and in some circumstances has been the ‘unofficial’ adopted parent to some country and interstate members of staff.”

While Cricket Australia is aware of the altercation, it believes it was out of its control because it happened after the official function.

A spokeswoman told Page 13 any inappropriate behaviour was taken very seriously.

“We take any allegation of misconduct or breach of staff values very seriously, but it would be inappropriate to discuss individual personnel matters.”
