Mike Sheahan will never forgive Rex Hunt for recent on-air tirade

It was the on-air spray from Rex Hunt to Mike Sheahan that left listeners, and the respected journalist, gobsmacked. Now, Sheahan is refusing to bury the hatchet with the former footballer, saying he went too far.

Sam's rebooted podcast back on air

The hatchet is anything but buried between footy stalwarts Rex Hunt and Mike Sheahan. Unless it’s in someone’s back.

Legendary AFL scribe Mike Sheahan says he will never forgive the two-time premiership player for unleashing a toxic spray on his podcast, You Cannot Be Serious, with Sam Newman and Don Scott.

“I was offended by his tone and as much as I like his wife, Lynne, that is the end of any relationship between Rex and me,” Sheahan told Page 13 yesterday.

“I’m a big boy and I know there are people in football who don’t like me. I can live with that. But I have much more respect for people who let me know that rather then suddenly drop it on me in a podcast.”

Hunt attacked Sheahan over his “line of questioning” when Sheahan interviewed him on his Open Mike Foxtel show back in 2013.

Hunt said the face-to-face interview focused on personal controversies, which involved, er, paid for extramarital sex.

“Everyone who comes on that show knows you are going to be asked questions about their lives on and off the field,” Sheahan replied. “So I have no ill feelings about anything that was asked.”

Sheahan called “bull***” on reports the pair had patched up their relationship after their podcast confrontation, saying it was anything but.

“I haven’t buried the hatchet, I haven’t been asked to and nor would I,’ Sheahan said.

“The most offensive part was the allusion that we weren’t friends. I presumed we had a friendship of sorts, not close, but he used to ring me all the time saying, ‘Michael, I know you’re busy but just a quick one, I think of you so highly, type of thing.’ ”

“I don’t care whether he likes me or not, but he shouldn’t have pretended to.”

“I was offended,” Sheahan said of Hunt’s podcast attack. “I felt that he should have said to me, ‘I didn’t like how you treated me on Open Mike and I am going to say that on the podcast.’

“I left before the podcast finished and I genuinely had an appointment and I took my leave.”

Hunt returned fire yesterday with the predictable line that it was all for a laugh.

“I’m very, very sorry Mike feels that way because I have better things in my life to be worried about than things that I thought were theatre. That’s what I do for a living, like Sam Newman, but that’s fine.”

Yibbida yibbida!

Sheahan responded with, “They can say what they like about theatre, but Sam was quite taken aback by what happened that day and was trying to be the mediator.”

Page 13 will leave you with the thought that whenever scallywag Sam Newman is playing mediator, you know something is wrong.
