AFL clubs seeking alternative ways to find an edge don’t have a great track record in recent times.
The Essendon peptide scandal blew up the club after Stephen Dank jabbed his way in, while Adelaide’s notorious pre-season (don’t mention the camp) kumbaya ultimately cost the coach and CEO their jobs.
Which brings us to the early months of 2020 and under-siege Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin.
Don’t worry, this isn’t about more beers with players or pillow talk, it’s all about peace, love and mung beans.
Desperate times call for desperate measures and the Demons coach wanted a celebrity energy healer on the payroll.
Charlie Goldsmith was seen as the Dees’ spiritual saviour, prompting the club to investigate hiring the social media witch doctor, whose claim to fame is that he could heal the sick with his touch in 60 seconds. This didn’t go down well with the Melbourne medical team and club doctor Zeeshan Arain.
This mumbo-jumbo revelation was buried among a treasure trove of documents unearthed by Herald Sun investigator Michael Warner.
Dr Arain, whose messy legal stoush with the Demons over his dismissal continues, did not support the hiring of Goldsmith.
In his legal claim, Dr Arain stated: “We understand the engagement was highly sought by Mr Goodwin. Ultimately, the club decided not to engage Mr Goldsmith.”
Namaste.
