Jack Steven isn’t letting the cat out of the bag about the events leading up to being stabbed in the chest this week.
With no AFL to watch and nostalgia games wearing thin, footy circles What’s App group messages took off faster than a soaring Sherrin.
The former Saints ball winner is a veteran of Melbourne’s social scene and has been back enjoying life with new girlfriend Marley Gordon.
It’s no secret Steven had a tough 2019. It followed the breakdown of his relationship with his ex-partner.
Sources close to the couple said Steven and medical receptionist Gordon have been together for around six months.
It got the Cats recruit smiling again. Gordon, who hails from Melbourne, was previously in a long-term relationship with bad boy GWS Giants star Toby Greene.
The couple lived together with teammate Jeremy Cameron in Greene’s multimillion-dollar inner-west Sydney home after he secured an eye watering six-year deal with the Sydney AFL club in 2018.
But Greene has moved on with Wesley private school sweetheart, Melbourne basketballer, Georgia Stirton.
As is the way of Millennials and footballers, Jack Steven and Marley Gordon went Facebook official late last year.
Looking carefree and happy, the couple spent November holidaying in New Zealand, playing golf and visiting wineries.
They later spent the summer down the coast in Lorne where Steven grew up.
But fast forward to this week and mystery surrounds what happened on the day of the attack.
Police are still scratching their heads after Steven refused to provide details of events leading up to going to Melbourne’s Cabrini hospital.
Page 13 has been told that Steven, a four-time best and fairest winner at St Kilda, was attacked by someone he knows, but he’s not saying who left him needing surgery.
Geelong’s Chris Scott may know more, warning against linking the stabbing to the 30-year-old Steven’s mental health issues.
The Cats’ coach says Steven was the “victim of something serious”.
He says he has “the feeling that some people want to roll some of the previous problems that Jack has had into this current situation and I would caution against that”.
Collingwood prez Eddie McGuire got on the bandwagon (with a few screeching Pot. Kettle. Didak. Black) yesterday on his Hot Breakfast program telling “Scotty” to “tell us what the hell happened”.
“Then we won’t have to jump the gun and figure out the line between the two points and all the rest of it,” McGuire said.
“That’s the easy way, just tell us what happened. Then we’ll be able to move on.”
Eddie has a point. Regardless, when it comes to footy, the cat never stays in the bag too long.
