Richmond superstar Dustin Martin is going back to his roots for a rumble in the Bendigo jungle.
The three-time Norm Smith Medallist will be ringside at Anthony Mundine’s fight with Michael Zerafa on Saturday at Bendigo Stadium.
The rumble of motorbikes will also be heard at the old gold mining town.
Think Toby Mitchell and his crew, not to mention plenty of other inked-up cronies.
Former Tigers player Jake “push-ups” King is on the list, as is AFLW star and boxer Tayla Harris.
Promoter Mick Gatto knows how to pull a crowd with the fight sold out within days.
But Gatto is making sure there are no fisticuffs outside the ring and has put the word out that he wants a clean fight.
Martin was born in nearby Castlemaine and played junior football with the Bendigo Pioneers.
Asked who will be joining the Tiger’s superstar ringside, Page 13 was told, “One of his teammates, a basher someone?”
Perhaps he meant Richmond premiership teammate Bachar Houli who shares the Muslim faith and is mates with Mundine.
NRL legend Sonny Bill Williams is also on the road to Bendigo with manager Khoder Nasser.
Williams confirmed his retirement from Rugby League this week and plans to return to boxing.
Nasser was Mundine’s agent until they split in 2012 when he urged the former NRL superstar to quit boxing while he was ahead.
Almost ten years later and Mundine said at the weigh-in his former manager told him the same thing in the lead up to the Zerafa fight.
“He doesn’t agree with me about this fight, he wanted me to stop ages ago,” Mundine said at the Melbourne Pavilion weigh-in.
“We had different plans, he didn’t want me to fight on. He told me to fight under somebody else.
“Khoder and me are brothers. He played a major role in my life. I played a major role in his life”.
A film crew from Fremantle TV is following Mundine as they prepare for a film about the never-say-never pugilist.
While this might be Mundine’s last bout in the square-ring, he is planning to take on Pauline Hanson.
Yes, the gloves are off.
The Indigenous former world champion is thinking of starting his own political party.
