Sidelined Demons star Christian Petracca’s recovery from season-ending internal injuries has been one of the most frustrating periods of his life.
But the popular midfield says there’s finally a light at the end of the tunnel after receiving the all-clear to introduce some watered down training back into his day-to-day.
“I can’t get my heart rate above 110, so I have a coffee in the morning and I’m probably already at 120,” he joked.
“It’s very, very low, low key at the moment, but it was awesome to kind of tick off a milestone and be able to do some sort of physical exercise. “
Despite making leaps and bounds, Petracca conceded there was still a “bit to go” to get back into the right headspace.
“It’s been a tough seven to eight weeks now, with the injury and obviously the mental and physical side of things,” Petracca told Page 13 as he lapped up the sun in Noosa.
“ … I’ve been working a lot over the last seven weeks with my psych and just trying to focus on other things in my life that give me great perspective and great positiveness.
“When you watch your teammates play, and you watch footy, it is quite tough still. But as I can start to do more, and I start to kind of take the shackles off and get word from the doctors, that’s really helping.”
Petracca will on Saturday enjoy some more light activity alongside 300 fellow runners at The Tan as he fronts Ralph Lauren’s Polo 67 Run Club to launch the brand’s new scent.
“I’ll probably run the first one kilometre and cancel and probably just pull out of them,” the Norm Smith medallist laughed.
Asked which fellow ambassadors would leave others in the dust, he quipped: “Nathan Freeman. He’s an ex-AFL player and he was very fast guy. I think he did Little Aths growing up and was a very good 100m sprinter. I’m not sure how Bec Hardy runs, that will be interesting to see how she goes – but I don’t want to judge anyone.”
