As we move back into the corporate landscape after working from home, there is one question men keep wanting answered — can you really get away with wearing sneakers to the office?
Pairing your suit with your kicks certainly takes some navigating, because the daggy jogging runners matched with a blazer, isn’t going to cut it.
So we asked the expert, Melbourne stylist and fashion commentator Elliot Garnaut who said that the look seen on many a dapper and stylish man and heavy hitter across Europe and the US can be done, it just needs to be office-friendly not slobby.
“For the perfect sneaker-and-suit combo, opt for clean lines and minimalistic designs – it’s like wearing your favourite jeans with a blazer, but with more swagger,” Garnaut said.
He said there is certainly a renewed appetite for the mere males’ workwear wardrobe, with department store giant David Jones recently reopening and again devoting an entire floor to menswear at Chadstone shopping centre.
“The key to a look that works for work, dinner, or a weekend outing is to strike the right balance between comfort and sophistication.”
He said the world of footwear has changed a lot since the days of the wearing Oxfords to the office, with a comfortable “dress sneaker”, or goes-with-everything white runner bringing a freshen up to the suit and tie ensemble.
