The wife of Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell has revealed the reason behind the singer’s wild onstage brawl with guitarist Dave Navarro.

Farrell was reported to have punched Navarro during the reunited band’s highly-anticipated Boston concert on Friday night, with several crew members seen dragging him off stage.

Farrell was in the middle of performing their song Ocean Size when he bizarrely began grunting and telling the audience at Leader Bank Pavilion “f**k you” before screaming into the microphone.

Weighing in on the fight, Farrell’s wife Etty Lau Farrell took to Instagram on Saturday morning to give “a first person account of what happened on stage,” claiming “there had been a lot of tension and animosity between the members” of the band.

She claimed the 65-year-old was frustrated the band was so much louder than his vocals and he was left “screaming just to be heard”.

“Perry’s frustration had been mounting, night after night, he felt that the stage volume had been extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band,” Etty Lou wrote.
“Perry had been suffering from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when the audience in the first row, started complaining up to Perry cussing at him that the band was planning too loud and that they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost it.”

Backstage, Avery – who according to Etty Lou – “won the fight”, reportedly “walked up to Perry, upstage, in the dark, behind Dan, put Perry in a headlock and punched him in the stomach three times”, she claimed.

“Perry was a crazed beast for the next half an hour – he finally did not calm down, but did breakdown and cried and cried,” she continued.

“Eric, well he either didn’t understand what descalation meant or took advantage of the situation and got in a few cheap shots on Perry.”

Wild video of the event appears to show the agitated frontman screaming and turning to Navarro, before violently throwing his shoulder into the unsuspecting guitarist.

The two rock stars tensely confronted each other on stage as Farrell inched closer to his bandmate’s face, despite him putting his hand up to establish distance.

The singer appeared to throw several punches at Navarro before the stage lights lowered and three men surrounded and grabbed a hold of Farrell, who was escorted offstage.

The three remaining band members — Dave Navarro, Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins — went to the front of the stage where they gave a warm farewell to the baffled crowd.

The musicians raised their hands above their heads, tapped their chests and gave peace signs as the audience gave them a standing ovation.

Photographer Brian MacKenzie, who was tasked with snapping the show for the venue, posted on X, formerly Twitter, that the crowd believed the confrontation could have been a “bit” between the bandmates.

“Perry had a huge bottle of wine with him all evening, Navarro and Avery kept chatting with each other the whole show and seemed angrier than normal,” he claimed.

“I was there,” X user @deanasc1 said. “The crowd was bemused. Half pissed the show ended early and half excited we may have seen the last Janes A show ever.”

Neither the band, Navarro or Perry have commented on the incident.

Jane’s Addiction, which is currently in the midst of their North American Tour, has reportedly had problems involving their singer during recent shows.

While performing at the Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City on Sept. 10, Farrell told the crowd his vocals were “not in great shape,” Variety reported.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I have to be honest with you. Something’s wrong with my voice. I just can’t get the notes out all of a sudden,” the singer allegedly said.

The next day, Avery took to Instagram to reach out to fans and hype them up for their second performance in Manhattan.

“Looking forward to getting another crack at this spectacular rooftop venue tonight. I’m optimistic we will be better,” he said.

Jane’s Addiction is scheduled to perform at Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut on Sept. 15.

The Grammy-nominated band’s 2024 tour marked the reunion of the four original members following Avery’s return in 2022 and Navarro, who had missed tours in 2022 and 2023 because of a battle with long COVID.

Farrell admitted he missed his guitarist during Navarro’s absence.

Jane’s Addiction formed in Los Angeles in 1985 and consists of vocalist Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Eric Avery.

Navarro left the band in 1993 to join the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with the group producing the album One Hot Minute (1995) during this time, before leaving in 1998.

Navarro returned to play full time in Jane’s Addiction in May 2024.
