Taylor Swift secretly showed her support for boyfriend Travis Kelce’s football career well before she was photographed cheering on the Chiefs star late last year.
Kansas City Chiefs defensive coach Dave Merritt told a US podcast Swift had been to games, but had not been spotted.
“When she started to come around, it was privately,” Merritt said on The Sports Shop With Reese and K-Mac podcast.
“She was coming into the stadiums without people really knowing until the camera put a big spotlight on it.”
The Kansas City Chiefs assistant also said Swift not only “helped” Kelce change for the better but also brought about positive changes to the team as a whole.
“She actually affected the team in a positive way. It wasn’t a negative way. Everybody was excited and Travis was happy,” Merritt said.
“So when my player, a brother, is happy beside me, that helps me and that encourages me and so Travis came in there a different man. So, she helped us.”
Merritt defended Swift against critics who said she was a distraction at Chiefs games, saying he considers her to be a “little sister” to the team.
Swift told Time Magazine last year that she and Kelce got together shortly after she heard he tried to give her a friendship bracelet with his number on it in mid-2023.
“So we actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other,” she said.
“I think some people think that they saw our first date at that game? We would never be psychotic enough to hard launch a first date.”
Swift attended her fair share of football games during the US NFL season, including the Super Bowl.
The star finished a show in Japan and flew straight to Las Vegas to be at the game.
Days later she flew to Melbourne to kick off the Aussie leg of the Eras Tour.
Kelce then flew to Australia to support Swift at one of her Sydney shows.
He left after a whirlwind two-day stay as he and the Chiefs returned to Las Vegas to continue celebrating their Super Bowl win.
Meanwhile, Swift’s longtime producer Jack Antonoff has said anyone who questions the star’s songwriting ability is “toast” to him.
In 2022, Blur singer Damon Albarn suggested Swift didn’t write her own songs, which, unsurprisingly, didn’t go down well with Antonoff.
The songwriter called him a “herb” at the time in a Twitter post.
“You come after my friend Taylor, you’re toast to me,” Antonoff told the Los Angeles Times, adding that questioning Swift’s songwriting “is like challenging someone’s faith in God. You just don’t go there”.
