SBS will give Eurovision fans the power to choose with Australia Decides show

SBS has confirmed they will bring back Australia Decides for the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest. Here are some suggestions for who should be the nation’s next star entrant.

Eurovision 2019: Netherlands win, Kate Miller-Heidke places ninth

Who should we send to the Netherlands for the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest?

SBS wants fans to make the call, confirming they will stage another Australia: Decides competition in February.

Kate Miller-Heidke won the inaugural selection show and let’s face it, we’re still not over the fact she didn’t win this year’s contest in Tel Aviv over the vanilla piano ballad.

No other singer in the history of the world’s biggest talent quest could hits those high notes while soaring metres above the stage on a bendy pole.

But there was some relief from Miller-Heidke about placing a highly respectable ninth and perhaps a greater exhalation from the SBS folks when it was all over.

As betting shortened Miller-Heidke’s odds in the countdown to the Eurovision final, SBS were contemplating where they would co-host the contest and where they would get the mega millions required for the television extravaganza’s budget.

Paul Clarke, the creative director for Australia Decides, has hinted there will be some tweaks to the selection show format and “some real surprises about who will be competing.”

Hosts Joel Creasey and Myf Warhurst will again host the Australia Decides event on the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on February 7 and 8.

The song portal where songwriters can upload their potential entries opens today with thousands of Australian composers, perhaps even Miller-Heidke, are expected to submit made-for-Eurovision power anthems for consideration.

As for who should sing them, here’s some suggestions for the Australia Decides team.

TINA ARENA

Mooted every year and this big stage, big event champion should be given a shot. Her French connections would come in very handy when it comes to attracting the jury and public votes we desperately need from those judgey Europeans.

Client Liaison — maybe with Tina? They paired up so successfully at Splendour In The Grass last year. While Monte Morgan and Harvey Miller have previously ruled out a tilt at Eurovision for fear of being labelled a “Eurovision” act, they need to get over themselves and use their indie pop credentials to win that crystal microphone trophy.

BAKER BOY

The indigenous superstar in the making is a quadruple threat. He can sing, rap, dance and play didgeridoo. As a live performer, he has been tearing up festival stages all over Australia and would be a unique voice and talent at Eurovision.

ELECTRIC FIELDS

Zaachariaha Fielding and Michael Ross came oh-so-close to repping Australia last year with their awesome song 2000 and Whatever and electrifying performance. They should be given another chance because they are that good.

THE VERONICAS

Hard rock festivals, New Year’s Eve gigs, is there anything this power pop duo can’t do? I have zero doubt The Veronicas will one day be flying the Australian flag at Eurovision, so why not 2020? You just know the Eurovision diehards would love the singing siblings.

DANNII MINOGUE

The younger Minogue sister would bring the requisite sass and star power to the Eurovision stage. Perhaps she could entice her mate Sia to trawl through her song files and find her an excellent pop anthem for 2020?

VANESSA AMOROSI

Those powerhouse pipes need to be unleashed in front of 200 million television viewers throughout the world. Amorosi may have had more comebacks than vinyl but Eurovision could be the platform which gets her career back on track.

LUKE STEELE

His Dreams project with Daniel Johns didn’t ignite as fans had hoped so this could fill in some time for Steele before the next Empire of the Sun record is due. He rocks a costume better than most rock and pop stars these days and has enough “weird” to intrigue the Eurovision family. He can write a great pop song too.

KIRA PURU

The indie pop goddess put her hand up last year but didn’t wave it hard enough in the general direction of Australia Decides organisers. She would be a strong contender for the 2020 spot.
