‘Really?’: Celine Dion blasts Donald Trump over song use

Music superstar Celine Dion has blasted the Donald Trump campaign for using a video of her singing her classic Titanic soundtrack song My Heart Will Go On at a recent rally.

The Canadian pop icon mocked the former US President over the unauthorised use of the

tear-jerking ballad.

In a statement, Dion’s team stated that Trump’s use of the song was not authorised.

The tongue in cheek statement also made a sardonic reference to Mr Trump’s choice of song, which was famously used in the Titanic movie to illustrate the eternal love story of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s characters, Rose and Jack.

A statement published on X and on Dion’s Instagram account, which has more than 8m followers, said: “Celine Dion’s management team and her record label, Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc, became aware of the unauthorised usage of the video, recording, musical performance, and likeness of Celine Dion singing My Heart Will Go On at a Donald Trump/JD Vance campaign rally in Montana.

“In no way is this use authorised, and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use.

“… And really, THAT song?”

This isn’t the first time an artist has rebuked Mr Trump for using their music.

In May 2023, representatives of the 70s group Village People threatened legal action after Trump used their song Macho Man and other hit songs without their permission.

Mr Trump also raised the ire of rocker Axl Rose when he used Guns N’ Roses’ 1991 classic November Rain at a rally during a previous presidential campaign.

Mr Trump is clearly a fan of Guns N’ Roses, once describing the video for November Rain — which featured Rose’s former girlfriend, supermodel Stephanie Seymour, in a thigh-skimming wedding dress — as the greatest music video of all time.

The Rolling Stones have also previously threatened legal action against the former president, while Neil Young actually sued Mr Trump.

Tom Petty’s family also called out the campaign for using the singer’s I Won’t Back Down in 2020 without permission.

Dion recently made a stunning comeback to performing following years of health issues after her Stiff-Person Syndrome diagnosis.

She sang Edith Piaf’s Hymne a l’Amour at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony, accompanied by just a piano.
