‘Nosedive’: Katy Perry’s career dealt final blow

Katy Perry’s new album has been awarded a shocking statistic that signifies that the once chart-topping pop princess’ career is dead in the water.

It’s been a rough few months for Katy Perry, who earlier this year had been positioned to have one of the most spectacular comebacks in pop music.

However, despite initially riding a wave of public goodwill, Perry has managed to squander it entirely.

It’s culminated in the reviews for her new album, 143, being the worst of her entire career by a substantial margin, which sadly says a lot for a singer who’s never been a critical darling to begin with.

In fact, Perry’s record has achieved notoriety by becoming the worst-rated album on review aggregator Metacritic for almost 15 years.

In a scathing review, Pitchfork said: “143 is a spectacular flop, but it’s a strange one — like one of those restaurants that looks nice and has an expensive menu but serves food so mid as to be insulting. One day you’re ablaze, burning yourself into corneas the world over. Then you’re just a smoky outline of what you once were. And then you’ve disappeared entirely. Just like a firework.”

The Line of Best Fit said the album “signals a career nosedive from which her reputation might not survive.”

While Exclaim called the entire record “offensively bad,” suggesting that “each track is an ADHD simulation — so understimulating you forget what it sounds like seconds after it ends.”

Sadly for Perry, music fans seem to agree, and they’ve made their opinions clear by avoiding streaming the new record in droves.

In the UK, the record is currently on course to potentially miss out on a Top Ten placing entirely, with a similar story emerging in most other major markets around the world.

It comes after Perry and the AFL have reportedly disagreed on the pop star’s song choice for her blockbuster show at the Grand Final.

The AFL secured the 39-year-old as its headline pre-game entertainment act in July — in news that was widely applauded by footy fans.

However, it has emerged the league and Perry’s representatives have only now settled a drama about the five songs the artist will play.

As first reported by leading footy journalist Tom Morris, the AFL made an extraordinary request for the singer to perform only recognised hits from her back catalogue.

Perry’s camp is reported to have pushed back and wanted to perform two new songs from her comeback album 143.

Morris said on SEN Breakfast on Monday the two camps had eventually reached an agreement for Perry to play just one new song.
