John Farnham has been rushed to hospital, seven months after he underwent surgery for a cancerous tumour in his mouth.

The Australian legend’s family said Farnham, 73, is being currently in hospital being treated for a respiratory condition. “But he is comfortable and receiving the best care,” the statement from his wife Jill Farnham said.

“John continues his recovery following last year’s successful surgery. He’s always been a strong and determined person with everything he’s ever done and we are all so very proud of him.

“He is responding well to the specialist care he’s receiving.

“The family would like to reiterate their appreciation for all the medical staff that have attended to John over the past six months, and for all the kind messages that have been received from across Australia and the world.”

Farnham’s health has taken on a toll on the singer in recent years. Last year, he was diagnosed with mouth cancer and had a 12-hour surgery to remove the malignant growth.

At Christmas time, Farnham’s manager and friend, David Wilson, told The Daily Telegraph that the “You’re the Voice” musician had been in good form over the holidays.

“It’s a process, it is slow and steady as she goes. He is going well,” Wilson said at the time.

“The Christmas tradition of after Christmas lunch sitting outside while John hosts music trivia questions continued. He was MC with the family all gathered around and we laughed like drains as we were all tested on our musical knowledge.”

In October, Farnham’s sons spoke to A Current Affair about their father’s surgery. Robert Farnham called it “pretty hairy” but that he had “pulled through”.

James Farnham revealed their dad had trouble sleeping before the diagnosis, and had noticed a lump on his cheek. It was a dentist that checked it out and referred Farnham to a specialist.

The superstar was then sent for a biopsy.

“He just thought it was an ulcer and it turned out to be cancerous. It’s just terrifying,” Robert said.

“As soon as they found out, dad was straight on the phone. (He) told us exactly what was going on, which was pretty brutal.

“To hear that was just another kick in the guts, but you’ve just got to be there and try and be as supportive for dad and mum as you can.”

According to his sons, the star “got all teary” when he learned of the outpouring of support from the public.

“He never expects everyone to still love him, but they do. So thanks, pretty much, everyone” James added.

The brothers said the Farnham family was also extremely grateful to the doctors, nurses and everyday Australians who have supported them in recent months.

“It was beautiful to see the amazing messages. It’s a strange thing, everyone just feels that they are a part of it, if that makes any sense. But it’s a good feeling,” Robert said.

“We can’t say enough how much we thank all the nurses and all the doctors. They did such a good job at putting him at ease and putting us at ease.”
