Taylor Swift new album: The best memes, tweets & fan reactions

Swifties have flocked to the internet to share their reactions to the pop superstar’s shock album reveal after many expected a very different announcement.

Jaws dropped to the floor when Taylor Swift announced the release a her new album at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Monday.

Swift shared details about the album, The Tortured Poets Department, while accepting the award for best pop vocal album.

“I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I have been keeping from you for the last two years,” she said, announcing that the new album would be available on April 19.

The album is set to feature 16 songs along with a bonus track titled The Manuscript.

Swift was quick to share the news on social media, posting the brand new album cover along with a glimpse of (presumably) lyrics.

“And so I enter into evidence, My Tarnished Coat of arms, My muses, acquired like bruises, My talismans and charms,” the lyrics, written on a folder, read.

“The tick, tick, tick of love bombs, My veins of pitch black ink, All’s fair in love and poetry … Sincerely, The Chairman of The Tortured Poets Department.”

The announcement triggered a social media frenzy, with some unable to keep up with the megastar who has been pumping out new content rapidly over the last four years.

“I can’t hardly wait”, one fan wrote on Instagram.

While another described the news as “Last night was WILD!!!! (sic)”.

Swifties were expecting the 14-time Grammy winner to announce the re-release of her sixth studio album, Reputation, at the awards ceremony, after she had been spotted wearing lots of black and green, and sporting her Reputation waves lately.

Fans are looking forward to more poetic lyrics from Swift, with many having fun with the album’s title being similar to the 1989 classic film The Dead Poets Society.

GRAMMYS AFTER-PARTY

G Flip has partied with music’s biggest names after the Grammys in Los Angeles. The Aussie star was joined by her wife, Chrishell Stause, as the couple hit up the Grammys afterparties.

Following music’s big night — which saw incredible performances from the likes of Tracy Chapman, Joni Mitchell and Annie Lennox, and a history-making win from Taylor Swift — stars hit the afterparty circuit, celebrating together all over Los Angeles.

TAYLOR MAKES HISTORY

It was ladies’ night at the 2024 Grammys with Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, SZA and Kylie Minogue in the winners’ circle and legends Celine Dion, Joni Mitchell and Mariah Carey making scene-stealing appearances.

After a year when female artists dominated critics’ best-of lists and fan playlists, Grammys voters mostly got it right, with Swift making history to be the first artist to win a fourth Album of the Year for Midnights.

She used her acceptance speech for an earlier win for Pop Vocal Album to reveal her two-year “secret” from fans that new record The Tortured Poets Department would be released on April 19.

Pop legend Celine Dion, who has been battling stiff-person syndrome for the past two years, made a shock appearance on stage to present the final award of the night to Swift.

“When I say that I’m happy to be here, I really mean it. From my heart,” she said.

But when Swift arrived on stage and assembled her co-winners, she appeared to snub Dion’s presence or neglected to thank her for her valiant effort in attending the Grammys during her speech.

A photo of the pair backstage after the awards finished was hastily shared on social media.

Mariah Carey was the first presenter of the televised ceremony, giving a thrilled Miley Cyrus her first-ever Grammy for Pop Solo Performance for her self-love anthem Flowers.

Cyrus, who performed the song live on television for the first time since its release in January 2023 and switched the lyrics to exclaim “I just won my first Grammy!”, delivered another notable snub for the night when she later collected Record of the Year.

She thanked “my mommy, my sister, my love” but not her dad Billy Ray. The pair have been estranged since her parents’ divorce.

Another winner with two Grammys to add to her collection was Billie Eilish, with her beautiful Barbie song What Was I Made For? claiming Song of the Year and Visual Media Song.

With her “best friend” brother Finneas O’Connell by her side, Eilish was clearly shaken by winning Song of the Year, declaring “Damn, that’s stupid, guys!” and adding she was “shocked out of my balls.”

This year’s leading nominee SZA took home three awards from her nine nominations including Best R&B Song, which forced her to race on stage breathless after a costume change to tearfully accept the trophy.

“I’m sorry, I’m just really overwhelmed … You just don’t understand,” she said crying. “I came really, really far and I can’t believe this is happening, it feels really fake.”

One of the greatest songwriters in contemporary music history Joni Mitchell performed on the Grammys stage for the first time in her six-decades career and also won Best Folk Album.

More than a few of the stars in the audience had something in their eyes as the revered artist sang her iconic Both Sides Now classic, her voice clear and emotionally powerful.

Other female artists to score multiple Grammy wins were Victoria Monet, boygenius and Paramore.

Minogue added a second Grammy to her collection this year by picking up the inaugural Pop Dance Recordings award for her comeback smash Padam Padam.

Latin star Karol G, country favourite Lainey Wilson and former First Lady Michelle Obama also picked up a trophy each.

Another Australian winner was guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel who claimed the Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella category with his version of Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues.

Jay-Z used his Global Impact Award speech to call out the Grammys for their historic lack of recognition for black artists, including his wife Beyonce.

With their daughter Blue Ivy standing beside him on stage, he pointed out Beyonce became the most awarded artist of all time with 32 Grammys wins last year but had yet to take out the night’s biggest prize Album of the Year despite her critically-acclaimed body of work.

“Obviously it is subjective because it’s music and it is opinion based but you know some things … I don’t want to embarrass this young lady (Beyonce), but she has more Grammys than anyone and never won Album of the Year. Think about that. That doesn’t work,” he said.

Kylie Minogue was at the vanguard of a female artists charge at the 2024 Grammys, with Padam Padam earlier taking out the inaugural Best Pop Dance Recording trophy.

The ecstatic singer celebrated her win screaming and running around her hotel room in a bathrobe.
