Australian broadcaster and presenter Erin Molan has opened up about a recent mortifying encounter she had with an international rock star.
In her column for this week’s issue of Stellar magazine, Molan reveals how a recent meeting with her “adolescent crush” Gavin Rossdale, frontman of the British rock band Bush, became a comedy of errors that left her feeling ashamed.
First, she met Rossdale as they posed for a photo together backstage at a show in Florida – and was so overcome with nerves at meeting her childhood idol, she decided to cut the tension by opening up some more conversation.
Molan says what came next was ‘potentially the worst combination of words ever to leave my mouth”:
“I’m so sorry about before at the photo wall. I’m not sure why I was so nervous,” she began.
“I’m a bit famous too in Australia, and get asked for photos a fair bit, so I know how it feels, and it’s such a privilege, but I also know sometimes it’s tiring so I just want you to know that I know how it feels, and I get it and …”
Rossdale’s reaction to these ‘I’m famous too’ musings from a woman who - while well-known in Australia – he presumably did not recognise at all?
Molan recalled watching in horror as the rocker “nods, smiles politely, and immediately moves away far quicker than he had approached.”
Molan joked that she deserved to get “cancelled” for the awkward encounter: “It’s not quite ‘don’t you know who I am,’ but it’s in the vicinity.”
