Ed Sheeran has shared his bumpy ride with Covid after revealing to fans earlier this week that he and one-year-old daughter Lyra had tested positive.

As he launched his new album Equals on Apple Music’s First Listen on Friday, Sheeran looked and sounded back to health.

“It was quite heavy at the beginning of the week. But I’ve rested a lot and I had a lot of vitamin C and zinc and (Vitamin) D and all these pills,” he told Zane Lowe.

“I feel a lot better now.”

Sheeran said he had daily phone calls from Elton John checking in on him and Lyra.

Their morning chat routine began back in March when the Rocket Man legend called to “see how I was doing” after the death of Sheeran’s mate and mentor, the Australian music champion Michael Gudinski.

“When Michael passed away, (Elton) rang me to see how I was and I really wasn’t good,” Sheeran said.

“And then from that point, he has literally rung me every day.

“I am feeding Lyra porridge in the morning and it’s ‘Say hi to Elton.’ There’s not many people in my life like that and I really, really appreciate him.”

Sheeran, an inveterate news leaker, also let slip he will be in Australia to play concerts for his Mathematics world tour in February and March next year ahead of an official announcement.

The Bad Habits superstar shared his Aussie tour plans when asked about how he deals with performing his emotionally charged songs, particularly the recent single Visiting Hours which he played at the memorial for his late mate and mentor Michael Gudinski in March.

“We are talking about doing some shows in Australia around the anniversary of (Michael’s) death and I am sure that’s going to be tough,” he said.

“That night it will be emotional.”

Sheeran shared more details behind the songs on Equals and how they were heavily influenced by “two very, very massive moments in my life” – the birth of his daughter and death of Gudinski.

He finished writing Visiting Hours in quarantine ahead of performing at the memorial and shared another album track, Leave Your Life, was partly inspired by a conversation he had with Kate Gudinski ahead of her father’s funeral.

“When I flew over for Michael’s funeral, I was in quarantine and I spoke to his daughter and said every single day, he would text her ‘I love you’ at the end of every conservation,” Sheeran said.

“Now when I get on a plane, I text my wife, I text my parents and I say I love you every time there might be something I might not get back from. It’s a very important thing.”
