Delta Goodrem’s new career goal: owner of a cat who becomes a YouTube sensation.
The musician initially fostered rescue kitten Bean, but fully committed after just two weeks.
“Bean has the most beautiful personality, there was no way he wasn’t staying forever,” Goodrem said.
“He was a little rescue kitten someone found, now he’s part of the family.”
Goodrem said the fostering program – she found Bean through Furry Friends Forever Rescue – was an ideal way to ‘trial’ owning an animal.
“You have to see if a pet works with your life. If it doesn’t work out that’s OK, but I fell in love with Beanie and it’s good to go for a rescue animal because they need to find homes.”
Goodrem filmed Bean playing notes on her piano unprompted – posting the clip on her social media.
“Bean is surrounded by music so it’s only natural he’d try to join in. My goal is to have one of those YouTube cats who can play a virtuoso piece on the piano. Watch this space. I’m not saying he’s a prodigy … but he might be a prodigy!”
Goodrem has released her first Christmas album, Only Santa Knows, which will battle Michael Buble (and now a surprise new Taylor Swift album) to top the festive chart this year – Goodrem’s album has also just been issued on vinyl.
“Buble’s the king of Christmas, but the thing with his (Christmas) album is it sounds exactly like who he is as an artist, and that’s what I wanted to achieve with Only Santa Knows.”
The singer has also taken on the role of Santa this year, surprising fans with bespoke gifts sent directly to their homes.
“Through the years I’ve been so overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness from my fans, so I’ve been secretly watching them. I’ve just sent a load of cupcakes to a lady who always brings me cupcakes, there’s been some presents that match with the fans’ personalities. There’s not enough time for me to say how grateful I am, so it’s the year of giving back.”
After being one of the first artists to announce an arena tour for 2021, Goodrem is pleased to see live music starting to return after the uncertainty around COVID-19.
“The tour has been there as a marker of positivity and hope, we had to upgrade to a bigger venue in Rod Laver in Melbourne. Safety and health is the No. 1 priority, but I’m feeling really good to be in arenas in April and May next year.”
