Aussie rock legends Cold Chisel have unveiled the title of their upcoming new single, ahead of their Blood Moon album and an epic national tour.

Cold Chisel’s last big lap around Australia will be soundtracked by the aptly titled Getting The Band Back Together.

Their first new song in four years also marks the first time the band have gone with a debut single, which features Ian Moss sharing lead vocals with Jimmy Barnes.

Released on October 31, Getting The Band Back Together was written by the band’s chief songwriter Don Walker and is a classic Chisel blues rocker which should prove popular when it makes its live debut on their Blood Moon summer tour next year.

The track will introduce their ninth studio album, also titled Blood Moon, which is expected to released in time for the Christmas record rush.

Walker faces the gargantuan task of fitting their new stuff in with their beloved old stuff for the summer concerts which kick off on New Year’s Eve in Fremantle.

“I do a setlist, they give me a kicking, I do another one. There are 13 or 14 songs that we have to do in a set otherwise they chase the plane throwing spears at us,” he said.

“And beyond that, you have leeway of about another eight or 10 songs you can put in, new ones, personal favourites.

“We always go out touring with new stuff and it’s always a case of getting as much of the new stuff in as we can — we’ve always done that since the 70s and 80s.”

Barnes, Walker, Moss, bassist Phil Small and drummer Charley Drayton haven’t as much confirmed this will be the Last Last Stand tour but said it is unlikely the band will undertake an extensive national tour of this size again.

The beach, bush, winery and stadium concerts mark the first time the band have booked a massive outdoor tour of Australia.

For their Sydney fans, Chisel have been booked to be the inaugural live concert at the new Bankwest Stadium in Parramatta while in their South Australia hometown, they will perform on Glenelg Beach, which Barnes joked police used to chase him off when he was a juvenile delinquent.

The Blood Moon tour won’t be a farewell as such with Chisel expected to regroup for special events in the future.

“You gotta think about it. We’ve toured four times together since 1983; I couldn’t see us getting around to doing this again,” Barnes said.

“It’s always an event to (tour) with this band and it’s a big beast to get going. It takes a lot of preparation and … we are going to treat this like it’s the biggest thing we’ve ever done.”

While the ferocity of their live performance has been proven box office gold on all four national tours they have played since their 1983 break-up The Last Stand, Mossy cites their enviable catalogue of songs ingrained in the Australian songbook for their enduring popularity.

“I think a lot of it comes down to being focused on the song and trying to create a song that’s going to be around for not just that week or that year but the next 50, maybe 100 years,” the guitarist said.

“Don realised that in the early days and would sit on a song for months waiting for the very last syllable to fall into the right place.”

Tickets for the Blood Moon tour go on sale on Monday.
