Singer Katie Noonan has slammed Madonna’s latest selfie and accused her of not respecting herself for altering her appearance.
The pop icon posted a photo on her social media to mark her 62nd birthday yesterday.
However Madonna’s smooth face has started debate online, including from Noonan, who fronted the band George before embarking on a solo career.
“I loved Madonna as a young girl, she was so unashamedly herself and a badass,” Noonan wrote, re-posting Madonna’s photo on her own Instagram and also tagging the singer’s own account.
“It is so so very sad to see women I admire submit their faces to plastic surgery/filler/Botox. I genuinely do not understand how any strong, self-respecting woman could do anything like this to their own face.
“Lines, stretch marks, scars, pigmentation – they are beautiful – they are a sign of the amazing power of our changing bodies and the privilege of growing older. What a gift to celebrate not a weakness to disguise. I reckon true self love means not doing anything to your face or body to alter its own natural beauty. Hurrah for natural beauty and the privilege of again kweens.”
When a follower commented Madonna “knows the mask she needs to put on to continue to do what she wants to do” and is using current technology Noonan replied that Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and Aretha Franklin “aged gracefully”.
Noonan’s latest album, The Sweetest Taboo, is full of 80s covers by acts including Whitney Houston, Eurythmics, Cyndi Lauper and Kate Bush.
