Fans of pop rock sensation 1975 were delighted when frontman Matt Healy was spotted catching up with fans in Sydney overnight.

Healy attended the Gladiator II premier on Wednesday night, catching up with eager fans at Sydney’s International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour.

Annabelle Dane, 25, from Sydney’s eastern suburbs, has been a fan of the 1975 since she was 12 and said she was grateful to have met Healy in an unexpected experience.

“It was super unexpected! Very much something I never thought would happen, but I’m very grateful for. He was a lovely guy,” Ms Dane told NewsWire.

“We knew that Gabriette (Healy’s fiancee) and Madelyn Cline were in Sydney and joked that they might attend the premiere but didn’t think they actually would. We certainly didn’t expect Matty to be there!”

She described Healy as “incredibly graceful and kind” as he went around and chatted to fans.

“He took photos and chatted to everyone until he was pulled into the theatre and didn’t appear annoyed by it at all,” Ms Dane said.

“I said that the popcorn I’m holding wasn’t mine, and he said it was now.

“I also mentioned that I saw them perform last time he was in Sydney and that he’s incredibly talented, and he thanked me.”

While she wouldn’t call herself a superfan, she loved the 1975 hit Somebody Else, saying it “got (her) through a lot”.

Ms Dane posted the experience to TikTok, under her account @annabelledane, captioning the video with “anyway unsure how to cope after this”.

A video posted to TikTok by another fan, who appeared to be chatting with Healy, confirmed “he stopped to take photos with so many ppl”.

People flocked to the comments to express their surprise at the celebrity appearance, with one asking “why is bro in Sydney”.

“Omg how did I miss this,” another wrote.

“he was HERE AND I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW IT,” added another.

“He’s always so nice to fans and I don’t think that’s appreciated enough,” commented another.

The UK star is reportedly in Australia supporting his fiancee Gabbriette Bechtel as she films I Never Forget What You Did Last Summer.

The Robbers singer came under intense scrutiny earlier in the year with the release of Taylor Swift’s 11th album, The Tortured Poets Department.

Fans speculated many songs off the hit album were written about Healy, with whom she shared a brief relationship with following her split from actor Joe Alwyn.

The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived was one of the main songs fans pointed to.

However, Healy recently made a subtle dig at artists who write about relationships, claiming that aside from his first album, he tries to steer clear.

“Honestly, I would kind of just be lying if I made a record about, I don’t know, all the stuff that was said about me or my casual romantic liaisons or whatever it may be that I’ve kind of become known for just because I was famous,” Healy said on Joshua Citarella’s Doomscrol podcast on Tuesday.

“I think that that’s an obvious thing to draw from and I’m just not interested in it. And I think the maintenance of the status quo is something that I always like fight against.

“So, the idea of making a record about something that personally happened to me, that by the time I put it out is gonna be like two years old … I see people doing that as well, and it’s not interesting.”
