A new slasher horror movie has reportedly “traumatised” fans of children’s character Winnie the Pooh after the film’s trailer was widely shared on social media.

In Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, director Rhys Waterfield reimagines the beloved characters, taking them down dark, twisted paths, The US Sun reports.

“It’s very easy to go down a route where nothing is scary and it’s just really ridiculous and really, like, stupid, and we wanted to go between the two,” Waterfield told Variety.

But shocked fans had a lot to say about the move.

“Less than one year after the original ‘Winnie the Pooh’ entered the public domain, we get this ‘Blood and Honey,’” one fan tweeted with a laughing emoji. “This is outrageous.”

“I just traumatised my editor by showing her the new trailer for Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. Good morning to everyone except the people who made that,” Newsweek writer Emma Mayer tweeted.

“Wait, is this a fan/joke trailer, or is the Blood and Honey movie ACTUALLY being made?” asked a third user.

Meanwhile, someone else wrote: “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey … just no.”

However, other movie buffs were excited by the release, with one writing: “Since being corrupted by my first Stephen King novel in third grade, I’ve always been more of a horror fan. So, I’m absolutely looking forward to Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.”

Disney owns all interpretations of the character as seen in various films and television shows since 1966.

So to get around copyright issues, Waterfield said they swapped Pooh Bear’s red shirt for lumberjack gear.

In the movie, Pooh (Craig David Dowsett) and Piglet (Chris Cordell) go on a rampage after Christopher Robin (Nikolai Leon) abandons them to go to college.

Without the influence of their human friend, Pooh and Piglet seek prey and stalk the humans near their homes.

It is a unique and twisted interpretation of A.A. Milne’s beloved characters.

Nerdist, a digital entertainment publication, praised the movie trailer on Twitter after its release on Wednesday.

“No joke – the new trailer for the slasher flick #WinnieThePoohBloodAndHoney is genuinely good!”

The release date of the movie has not yet been announced.
