Why George Lucas was disappointed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens

STAR Wars creator George Lucas has been forced into a hasty apology after making an incredibly snarky comment.

STAR Wars creator George Lucas has given a candid interview, admitting he was disappointed by the latest Star War film.

Lucas said it was very similar to his original trilogy — and begrudgingly described it as a “retro” movie.

“They wanted to do a retro movie,” Lucas said in an interview with Charlie Rose.

“I don’t like that.”

“Every movie, I work very hard to make them different,” he said.

“I make them completely different, with different planets and different spaceships, to make it new.”

Lucas also said he has always called the first six movies his “kids,” saying he “sold them to white slavers that take these things and…,” before stopping and laughing his comments off.

Since making his comments, Lucas has apologised for criticising Disney’s handling of Star Wars and saying he had sold his characters to “white slavers”.

In a statement, Lucas said he misspoke and used a “very inappropriate analogy.”

It’s not clear what he meant, and Rose didn’t ask a follow-up question on his PBS show that aired Christmas Eve.

Lucas sold his production company Lucasfilm with the rights to Star Wars to Disney in October 2012 for more than $4 billion.

Lucas, 71, reportedly offered some ideas for J.J. Abram’s new film to Disney, which “they decided they didn’t want to use.”

“They weren’t that keen to have me involved anyway,” he said.

Lucas also added that he has found it difficult to let go of the Star Wars franchise.

“You have to put it behind you,” he said.

“It’s a very hard thing to do.”

His comments come after Star Wars fans have been debating whether the opening line of dialogue in The Force Awakens is a subtle dig at the creator for his “awful prequels”.

In the hit film’s first scene, Lor San Tekka (Max Von Sydow) meets pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) to give him part of the map to find Luke Skywalker.

The first thing San Tekka says is: “This will begin to make things right.”

Some fans say that, in the context of the movie, it’s a reference to finding Luke and returning balance to the Force. But others have interpreted the opener very differently.

“Is that a dig against the awful prequels?” a Quora user wrote online, sparking a massive debate on whether director J.J. Abrams would be mean enough to slam the franchise’s creator.
