Which Avenger will be killed by Thanos in the Infinity War movie?
THE Avengers Infinity War will see at least some of our favourite superheroes killed by Thanos. But who will live and die? And how many? We take a look at all of the favourites and rate their chances. TAKE OUR ONLINE POLL.
Movies
Don't miss out on the headlines from Movies. Followed categories will be added to My News.
AS Australia goes mad for Thor: Ragnarok, attention begins to turn to the next Avengers movie — and the horrifying premise that big baddie Thanos is going to kill off at least one of the heroes.
And it could well be more. After all, in the comic book on which the movie will be based, he killed EVERY Marvel hero. He made a mound of hero corpses.
Of course, the comic used that old plot device where his magical Gauntlet is stolen and then used to turn back time and bring everyone back to life.
So will they do that? Kill everyone?
Or will it just be one, two or a few?
Let’s look at the main contenders and then you tell us in our online poll who you think will die.
Let’s assume they won’t go down the comic book route and kill everyone. What are the chances of your favourite hero surviving?
IRON MAN
Will die
He’s the daddy of the Marvel Universe, having kicked the whole thing off. There probably won’t be any more solo movies and Robert Downey Jr is getting a bit old to buff up every couple of years. Plus, he’s not going to get over the whole “Winter Soldier killed my parents” storyline from Captain America: Civil War. Killing off Iron Man would usher in a new era of superheroes and deliver a massive shock to the audience.
Won’t die
He’s the heart and soul of Marvel. Without him, it would feel flat. Plus, as Spider-Man: Homecoming showed, he doesn’t have to carry the movie. He just has a few scenes and some computer-generated action. Besides, there is a much juicier target — Captain America.
CAPTAIN AMERICA
Will die
His narrative arc is coming to an end, thanks to Captain America: Civil War. And there is one person just waiting in the wings to take up the shield and the persona — his old mate Bucky Barnes, currently in the Black Panther’s deep freezer and equipped with all the necessary skills and emotional baggage to become an even more interesting Captain America.
Plus, all the heroes are fragmented. Seeing Captain America die would bring them together, in much the same way as Coulson’s death in the original movie galvanised the first team.
Won’t die
He’s just hooked up with the granddaughter of his old flame (eeeurgh!) and that love story needs to play out. Plus, if Iron Man goes, then there is no need for Captain America to die, Thanos can just kill off some of the minor Avengers and that’s good enough.
VISION
Will die
It’s a given. He has an Infinity Stone in his noggin, which gave him life. Thanos needs that to complete his Gauntlet and so Vision will be the first target. He’s not likely to survive having his head ripped apart.
Won’t die
Don’t forget he was formerly Jarvis, the artificial intelligence program that used to run Tony Stark’s life. So he has a rather elastic definition of “life”. He will die but they might bring him back to life again.
THOR
Will die
He’s a god, so having him killed by Thanos is a sure-fire way to get everybody’s attention. Plus his trilogy of films have wrapped up, so it’s not like they are in desperate need of him for a sequel.
Won’t die
After the somewhat ponderous second Thor movie, he was almost guaranteed to be killed off. But Thor Ragnarok was so much fun, he’s too good to go. Plus, he’s a god — so he’s almost impossible to kill.
THE HULK
Will die
Marvel has gone out of the way to show that The Hulk cannot be killed — so to have Thanos get rid of him makes a huge statement. Plus it’s not like he’s going to have his own movies. Those have always been flops.
Won’t die
Same reason as Thor won’t die. Plus there’s the whole Black Widow romance bubbling away that could be addressed in another movie. And, if she dies, then it gives him another reason for anguish and fury.
BLACK WIDOW
Will die
She’s only human and doesn’t stand much of a chance against a being of Thanos’s power. Most importantly she has strong connections with The Hulk, Captain America and Iron Man. Nothing could unite these disparate groups of heroes like her death.
Won’t die
Avengers is desperately short of strong female characters and she’s about the strongest. And there’s still a chance of a solo film later, with some Hulk action.
HAWKEYE
Will die
We’ve seen he has a wife and kids, so watching him die is more of a wrench. Plus, like Black Widow, he’s only human so easy prey for Thanos.
Won’t die
Will we really care that much? Sure, we like him but he’s not exactly Captain America or Iron Man. Killing other heroes will have a far greater impact.
SCARLET WITCH/WANDA MAXIMOFF
Will die
She rather fancies Vision, so when he gets the chop, she’s likely to go a bit nuts and tackle Thanos head-on. That can’t end well.
Won’t die
Like Black Widow, she’s one of the few female Avengers. Plus she has all this magic, which is perhaps their only hope against Thanos.
DOCTOR STRANGE
Will die
At first glance, he’s in big trouble. After all, he wears the Eye of Agamotto, which contains an Infinity Stone. Thanos wants that as bad as he wants the one in Vision’s head. But will he just steal it from Strange’s Sanctuary or will be pull it from his lifeless body? After all, Benedict Cumberbatch is a busy guy, so he might not have time for any more Doctor Strange movies. So kill him off in the Avengers and find someone else.
Won’t die
Doctor Strange can manipulate time. If they decide to go down the comic book route and kill off a huge number of heroes, he could be the one to turn back time and bring them back to life. He will need the Eye of Agamotto to make that happen though ...
NICK FURY
Will die
He’s human, he’s totally without fear and utterly determined to preserve the Earth. So obviously he’ll be in the front line of the battle, even though he has no super powers.
Won’t die
Who are we kidding. He’s a goner. SHIELD was destroyed in Winter Soldier and there is no reason for him to be around. Bye, bye Nick.
LOKI
Will die
Thor already thought he had sacrificed himself to save him back in Dark World. It would be a cunning jest befitting of the Trickster God that this time he actually will die to save his brother. Plus, Thanos is furious at him for stuffing up the invasion of Earth back in the original Avengers. He’ll want revenge.
Won’t die
He can use magic and illusion to make everyone think he is dead but actually he’s hiding out, enjoying some popcorn as the battle rages.
BUCKY BARNES/THE WINTER SOLDIER
Will die
If they decide to keep both Iron Man and Captain America alive, then Barnes has to die so Tony Stark can come to terms with losing his parents. Plus it will enrage Captain America. And Barnes has done terrible things. Sacrificing himself to save, say, Tony Stark would end his storyline neatly and heroically.
Won’t die
Will we really care if a murdering psycho dies? Plus, having him take up the shield of Captain America makes for a far more interesting Captain America.
BLACK PANTHER
Will die
No, sorry, it’s not going to happen. They only just introduced him and his first solo movie isn’t even out yet.
Won’t die
Too important a character in the next phase of Marvel movies.
FALCON
Will die
Highly possible. He’s only human and is also loyal to Captain America. If Cap dies, then Falcon will die soon after/just before.
Won’t die
He’s a minor character. You can’t imagine all the heroes sitting around with heads in hands because Falcon snuffed it.
WAR MACHINE
Will die
It’s either him or Iron Man. If one survives, then the other has to die.
Won’t die
As I said, it’s either him or Iron Man. If one survives, then the other has to die.
ANT-MAN AND WASP
Will die
Nope. Not gonna happen. Their solo movie is out later.
Won’t die
They can’t. They are signed up for another solo movie.
PETER QUILL/STAR LORD
Will die
Nope. He’s the face of Guardians Of The Galaxy franchise and that’s too big to wipe out by having him killed off while guest starring in Avengers.
Won’t die
See above
NEBULA
Will die
At the end of Guardians of The Galaxy II, she told Gamora she was going off to kill their adoptive father Thanos. Given she couldn’t even beat Gamora, I don’t like her chances. Plus, killing her is an even stronger reason for the Guardians to get into the action.
Won’t die
Thanos has given her regenerative powers. It’ll take a lot to kill her.
GAMORA
Will die
Uh-uh. Too important to the GOTG franchise. Plus it’s more of an impact that her sister dies.
Won’t die
As above
DRAX
Will die
Has spent two films declaring he wants to kill Thanos but got his arse kicked when he tried to tackle Ronan, who has about half the power of Thanos. He’ll run in, knives a-waving and get slaughtered.
Won’t die
He needs to see that revenge is an empty emotion. Plus it’s being set up so he falls in love with Mantis in GOTG 3.
ROCKET
Will die
Are you insane? Kill Rocket? He’s far too cute.
Won’t die
We’d be sad to see the likes of Iron Man die. But audiences would go berserk if Rocket died. Plus the RSPCA and PETA would be all over Marvel if they kill off the CGI raccoon.
GROOT
Will die
He could. After all, he died at the end of the original GOTG. Plus he’ll be angsty teenage Groot in this one, which isn’t nearly as cute as toddler Groot from GOTG II.
Won’t die
If he dies, they’ll just plant a twig in the ground and bring him back. And then he gets to be cute Groot for another movie.
