Reason Henry Cavill’s Superman axing is a mistake

When Henry Cavill left The Witcher, it was expected he would return as Superman. Now the news of the star’s departure seems like a betrayal to fans.

Henry Cavill dumped as Superman, two months after announcing return

COMMENT

Henry Cavill announced in October that he would return to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) as Superman.

DC fans like myself rejoiced at the news. It would have been the first time the actor donned the blue tights and red cape since 2017’s Justice League.

My excitement increased when I saw Cavill’s surprise cameo in Black Adam (to me, the only good thing that came out of that disastrous flick).

With the announcement of Marvel director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran running DC Studios, the troubled superhero franchise seemed hopeful.

News of Man of Steel 2 in early development and the hunt for writers appeared Cavill’s DC future was bright.

Cut to two months later, I was shocked to hear that he was dropped as Superman.

The news got more interesting when Gunn announced that the next Superman movie would focus on a younger version of the character and it will not be played by Cavill.

Wait. What? How could this happen? Are we living in a bizarro world?

Cavill left the Netflix series The Witcher to play the iconic superhero and now the role is going to be taken away from him? It’s outrageous.

To me and the fan community, Gunn’s DC shake-up feels like a betrayal.

Based on the Black Adam appearance and news of Cavill’s return, there was an expectation of a stand alone Superman film on the way.

Now it’s not going to happen because the director has decided to reboot the franchise with a younger character. It sounds like a dumb decision to move Cavill out of the role.

Personally, I don’t want to see a young Superman or another origin story. I rather see Cavill return and give him the Man of Steel sequel he deserves.

Cavill was robbed as Superman. If you look back at his DCEU films, he never got to properly fulfil his potential because DC was too focused on trying to replicate The Avengers without taking the time to invest in the character properly.

After a solid debut, two lacklustre follow-ups and a pointless cameo, Cavill deserved better.

To me, Cavill was the perfect choice to play Superman. He looked the part and had the physique.

He brought a modern take to the role and managed to keep the essence of the character.

Cavill embodied a sense of honour, dignity, respect and he made Superman feel like an all-round genuine hero.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Gunn. I have faith he and Safran will guide DC films into the right direction. But, I hope he knows what he is doing.

The filmmaker said he and Safran are “big fans” of Cavill and that their meeting included discussions about “exciting possibilities” for the actor “in the future.” I guess it shows that the door hasn’t fully closed for him.
