Proving that even celebrities get starstruck, Bobby Cannavale has opened up about the first time he met Bruce Springsteen ... and it didn’t go well.
Cannavale spoke to news.com.au alongside Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone to promote the new movie Superintelligence which hits cinemas on Thursday.
In the film, Cannavale’s character freaks out when meeting one of his sporting idols.
When asked if he’d ever freaked out in front of a star, Cannavale said: “Oh yeah, I’ve met so many people that I’ve done that with. I’m a little friendly now with Bruce Springsteen but the first time I met him it was very, very, very, very bad. It involved physical things and his bathroom and it was terrible.”
His confession shocked McCarthy who said, “What?!”
“It was so bad,” Cannavale recalled. “I excused myself and … blew it up.”
“Did he just say ‘blew it up?’” Falcone giggled. “I never want to hear ‘bathroom’ and ‘blew it up’.”
Cannavale, McCarthy and Falcone are just some of the many Hollywood A-listers that are currently in Australia, with others including Mark Wahlberg, Zac Efron, Liam Neeson, Nicole Kidman and Natalie Portman.
I have often wondered if celebrities save their famous friends’ phone numbers under their actual names in their mobiles, or if they create nicknames.
Cannavale does the latter.
“I don’t want people to find my phone but everybody has a nickname,” the actor, who is married to Rose Byrne, said.
Cannavale revealed that he has McCarthy saved in his phone as ‘MM’ and added: “I have (Al) Pacino in as ‘Montana’.”
“Someone’s going to find your phone … you can’t give away the secret name!” McCarthy said to him.
“I’ll change it,” Cannavale laughed.
Superintelligence, which was directed by Falcone, is about Carol Peters (played by McCarthy) who starts getting snarky backtalk from her TV, phone and microwave.
She thinks she’s being punked or losing her mind, but in fact, the world’s first artificial superintelligence (voiced by James Corden) has chosen to study and observe Carol’s attempt to romantically reconcile with her former boyfriend (Cannavale) to better understand the human condition.
Soon, the all-powerful entity takes over her life with ominous plans to take over the world. Carol is potentially humanity’s last chance before this AI-with-an-attitude decides to pull the plug.
The movie arrives in cinemas on December 17. You can check out the trailer below.
