Margot Robbie breaks silence on Oscars snub for Barbie

Australia’s own Barbie, Margot Robbie, has broken her silence on missing out on an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Margot Robbie addresses Best Actress Oscars snub for Barbie movie

Margot Robbie says she has “no reason to feel sad” after missing out on an Oscar nomination for her role in the smash-hit movie Barbie.

Robbie, 33, failed to get a nod for Best Actress at the 2024 Academy Awards and the film’s director Greta Gerwig was also excluded from the Best Director category.

Speaking on a panel for a special Screen Actors Guild screening of Barbie, Robbie broke her silence on the matter.

“There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed,” Robbie said.

“Obviously I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is.

“But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”

Barbie, which holds the record as the first billion-dollar film directed by a woman, earned a total of eight Oscar nominations including for Ryan Gosling’s portrayal as Ken.

“I just suspect it’s bigger than us. It’s bigger than this movie, it’s bigger than our industry,” Robbie said of the film’s success.

Despite the snubs, Robbie said she was “beyond ecstatic” about the film’s nominations.

“We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact,” she said.

“And it’s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamt it would.

“And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”

Barbie has been nominated for Best Picture.

Gosling was nominated for best supporting actor and America Ferrera for best supporting actress.

The film has also been nominated for best adapted screenplay, costume design and production design.

Gosling released a strongly-worded statement after his leading ladies missed out on a nomination.

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” he said.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.

“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history.

“Their work should be recognised along with the other very deserving nominees.

“Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

Ferrera’s nomination made Robbie’s snub even more difficult to swallow.

“Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it,” Ferrera said in a statement.

“Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon.

“It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”
