LEIGH PAATSCH SAW THE WORST MOVIES SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO
LOST IN TRANSLATION (2003) *****
Foxtel Now
A sweet and soulful tale of two lost individuals finding a new direction in life. Johansson is terrific as a prematurely jaded young woman forming an unlikely bond with a melancholy movie star (a career-best Bill Murray). The other-worldly night-life of modern Tokyo provides a bewitchingly beautiful backdrop for this near-flawless mood piece from writer-director Sofia Coppola (The Beguiled).
VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA (2007) ****
Foxtel Now
A lively comedy of manners, morals and mischief from filmmaker Woody Allen. Johansson and Rebecca Hall star as two young American tourists who fall under the spell of a seductive artist (No Country For Old Men’s Javier Bardem) during summer holidays in the Spanish capital. A relaxed, carefree vibe does not blunt the edge of some sharply observed humour. Barcelona is a delight to gaze at throughout too.
HAIL, CAESAR! (2016) ***1/2
Netflix
Johansson is a standout as a tough-talking screen siren in this goofy celebration of the last days of Hollywood’s fabled “golden age” in the 1950s. Josh Brolin stars as studio fixer Eddie Mannix, the man the studios always call when a big star is in big trouble. His main assignment here is to track down a hellraising heart-throb (George Clooney) who has been kidnapped from the set of a biblical epic.
THE PRESTIGE (2006)***1/2
Netflix
A minor work from a major filmmaker in director Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk, Inception), but riveting stuff nonetheless. Johansson plays an aspiring stage star swept up in an escalating rivalry between two leading magicians (Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman) in 19th century London. A clever thriller which lags a bit midway through, until rallying for a great “big reveal” at the finish.
ROUGH NIGHT (2017) ***
Foxtel Now
A raunchy female-driven comedy, capable of both surprising and amusing viewers when least expected. Johansson is joined by Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer, and Zoe Kravitz to play former college friends reuniting for a bachelorette weekend in Miami. After a big evening out, the group hire a male stripper who accidentally dies before he can get his gear off.
