BLACK SEA (2014)
SBS On Demand

Set any thriller inside a submarine, and it isn’t long before the claustrophobia comes flooding in. Here we plunge the depths of dread at all-too-close quarters within a creaky old Russian rust-bucket. The captain is Robinson (Law), an embittered seaman who assembles a dodgy crew to retrieve a stash of gold from a Nazi U-boat rumoured to be sitting on the bottom of the Black Sea. Co-stars Ben Mendelsohn.
COLD MOUNTAIN (2003)

***1/2
Law is a wounded Confederate soldier who goes AWOL from the front line of the Civil War to be reunited with his Southern belle sweetheart Nicole Kidman. Epic romance specialist Anthony Minghella (The English Patient) serves up an attractive adaptation of Charles Frazier’s acclaimed novel. Benefits greatly from the presence of Renee Zellweger as a feisty frontierswoman.
SHERLOCK HOLMES (2009)
Netflix
***1/2
This ain’t yer grandad’s Sherlock Holmes. The setting is still 19th century London, but Holmes (played eccentrically, but effectively by Robert Downey Jr.) and his loyal offsider Dr Watson (Law) are now hardline he-men. A bravely bonkers action thriller with a crazed comic edge from director Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels). Co-stars Rachel McAdams.
THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY (1999)
Foxtel Now, Stan
****
A fascinating (and often baffling) thriller about assumed identity and naked greed, based on the classic book by Patricia Highsmith. Don’t be deceived by the picture-postcard looks of the 1950s Europe setting, as things get quite ugly quite quickly once psychotic poor boy Matt Damon decides he wants a slice of the high life as lived by the swingingly single Law. Co-stars Cate Blanchett.
SIDE EFFECTS (2013)

****
Intoxicating thriller, both highly intelligent and highly implausible. After a nervous breakdown, Emily (Rooney Mara) is prescribed a wonder drug by a suspect psychiatrist (Law) which seems a quick fix for all her problems. As we come to learn, the experimental antidepressant does a hell of a lot more than what it says on the label. A tense tall story with so many short, sharp thrills. Co-stars Channing Tatum.
