NEW HALLOWEEN IS TERRIFYINGLY ENTERTAINING

DON’T BREATHE (2016)

ITUNES

****

One rundown house. Three young amateur burglars. A loner who does not take kindly to uninvited visitors. A huge pile of cash. In the wrong hands, this would make for 30 minutes of must-see movie at most. Not this time. The battle of wits and deployment of desperate measures are staged with nerve-shredding efficiency. You will stagger away from this ordeal both intimidated and impressed.

GREEN ROOM (2015)

NETFLIX, SBS ON DEMAND

****

One of the most creatively creepy film experiences of recent times. A lively, unsettling story centres on a hardcore punk band forced to take a dangerous gig they should have rejected. Once inside the skinhead club run by white-supremacist leader Darcy (Patrick Stewart .... yes, Patrick Stewart!), the end of the show just might be the end of the group’s career. And also, the lives of every member.

IT COMES AT NIGHT (2017)

FOXTEL NOW, STAN

****1/2

A perplexing mind-melter. A highly infectious plague is encircling the residents of a heavily fortified cabin in the woods. Paul (Joel Edgerton, superb), calls the shots. His wife Sarah (Carmen Ejogo) and son Travis (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) dutifully follow suit, knowing their lives depend on it. The ever-niggling promise of what can (and will) go wrong gives this intimately intimidating affair a raw intensity all its own.

RAW (2017)

STAN

****

Audaciously out-there horror from France. This is the tough-to-stomach story of Justine (a stunning Garance Marillier), a student who used to be a vegetarian. Until she became a cannibal. When the urge for a snack attack takes her, everyone on campus had better watch out. Hardline horror buffs should note is that this is every bit as unhinged and undeniably smart as you might have heard.

LIGHTS OUT (2016)

GOOGLE, ITUNES

***

A short, sharp and not-so-sweet horror movie, getting the jolting job done with a minimum of fuss. A house is under the nightly control of an evil spectre that can wreak terminal havoc if darkness levels approach pitch-black. If you’re not within reach of a torch - or too far from a light switch - a one-way ticket to the cemetery awaits. Teresa Palmer leads those running from one-dimly-lit room to another.
