MOVIES FROM SOLO STARS TO STREAM RIGHT NOW
MACHETE (2010) ***
Foxtel Now
A fake trailer from Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 exploitation epic Grindhouse somehow spawned a full feature. The acting is OTT and the dialogue is LOL at all times. Veteran hardman Danny Trejo has the title role, and the old guy is simply a marvel as a Mexican lone wolf who strays into Texas to tear apart a redneck or two. Or twenty. Or two hundred. Co-stars Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba.
MAN ON FIRE (2004) ***1/2
Netflix
Highly involving revenge thriller featuring yet another top-notch performance from the great Denzel Washington. He plays an alcoholic ex-CIA agent who falls into a gig as a private bodyguard in a trigger-happy Mexico City. A very strong support cast includes Christopher Walken, Radha Mitchell, Dakota Fanning and Mickey Rourke.
LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE (1992) ***
Netflix
One of the best food films ever, changing its flavours as quickly the many moods of its heroine. Tita (Lumi Cavazos) has been seemingly cheated of the love of her life, Pedro (Marco Leonardi), by her cruel mother (Regina Torne). So Tita fights back in the only way she knows how: through a supernatural culinary talent that transfers her thwarted passion to other people’s tastebuds.
THE BOOK OF LIFE (2014) ***
Google, iTunes
One of the more original and ambitious (in storytelling terms, at least) animated offerings of recent times. A rather complicated tale is rooted firmly in traditional Mexican folklore. Channing Tatum and Zoe Saldana lead the voice cast in a story spanning three distinct and beautifully rendered dimensions: the Lands of the Living, Remembered and Forgotten.
LOGAN (2017) ****
Foxtel Now
The screen swan song of X-Men mutant Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) makes the cut here because the main man’s hard-to-find hideaway sits on Mexican soil. Unusually for a Marvel production, this is a lean, mean and desolate action picture. It certainly doesn’t want to hug you. At times, it seems like may intend to hurt you. Highly recommended if you’ve never seen it. Co-stars Patrick Stewart.
