Jaw-dropping trailer released for Avatar: The Way of Water

13 long years after James Cameron’s Avatar broke box office records worldwide, he’s given fans the first proper look at the sequel.

Thirteen long years after James Cameron’s megahit Avatar broke box office records worldwide, the director has finally given fans their first proper look at its long-awaited sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.

A teaser trailer that was released in cinemas last week and debuts online today shows what Avatar fans can expect from the sequel, which will “tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”

The original Avatar film was a sci-fi epic which remained the highest-grossest film of all time for a decade until it was overtaken by Avengers: Endgame in 2019. A subsequent Chinese re-release of Avatar saw it retake the top spot in 2021.

Despite that success, there’s been some conjecture in recent years about just how much demand there would be for an Avatar sequel, more than a decade after the original film. The ever-confident Cameron actually has four sequels planned: After The Way of Water opens in Australian cinemas on December 15, it’ll only be a one-year wait for Avatar 3. Avatar 4 will come in December 2024, while Avatar 5 and 6 are scheduled for December 2026 and 2028 respectively.

The sequel sees the first film’s cast – Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver – returning alongside new stars including Kate Winslet, Jemaine Clement and Edie Falco.
