Dune reveals new trailer, reminds us it’s still coming

After being delayed by a year, one of the biggest movies of the year – if not the biggest – has just revealed a new trailer.

Dune movie trailer finally drops

You obviously haven’t forgotten about Dune. There’s no way you forgot about the most anticipated movie of 2021.

But – and that’s a huge but – if you did forget, we forgive you. Dune was meant to come out last year and the year-long delay means it’s bound to slip some minds, especially as there are, shockingly, other things going in the world.

In case you needed a refresher, the filmmakers have released a new trailer, to whet the appetites and to remind you that fear is the mind killer.

The release is so tantalisingly close now – October 21 in Australia – and the film is only weeks away from its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in early September.

Australian Dune fans will be able to register for a lottery to be among the first in the country to see the film at a special advanced screening.

The epic sci-fi adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Prisoners) and will cover roughly the first half of the book.

It features a star-studded cast including Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista and Charlotte Rampling.

The story is about Paul Atreides (Chalamet), the son of a Duke (Isaac) who is charged with overseeing a desert planet that grows a precious spice with enormous powers. But, as with anything of value, there is a power struggle over controlling the spice.

Since its publication in 1965, Herbert’s influential book has attracted legion of both genre and mainstream fans. It has previously been adapted for the screen twice – a divisive 1986 version by David Lynch and a largely forgotten miniseries in 2000.

Villeneuve’s version is being met with great anticipation given the Canadian filmmaker’s impressive track record in sci-fi and the calibre of the cast. Plus, the reported $US165 million ($A224 million) budget and Villeneuve’s choice to shoot as much practical effects and on location as possible.

Villeneuve said last year during a promotional panel: “In order to bring Dune to the screen, I needed to be as close to nature as possible and make Dune as close to us as possible so when people see the movie, they will be amazed by the power of the landscape.

“Most importantly, they will feel strangely at home because I think it’s important from a subconscious way to feel that this could be so real because what the movie is about is it’s about us, and I want the audience to feel deep inside their soul what I was feeling as I was reading the book.”

Earlier in the week, the production also released a set of character posters which features eight of the cast.

A potential sequel covering the second half of Herbert’s book is yet to be confirmed.
