Chris Hemsworth reveals Thor Sequel is being shot in Sydney

One of the Marvel Comic Universe’s most highly anticipated sequels will be heading Down Under to film very, very soon.

A-listers Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman will bring their star power to Sydney when they film Marvel’s next Thor movie in the Harbour City.

Hemsworth joined federal Arts Minister Paul Fletcher and his NSW counterpart, Don Harwin, at Moore Park on Friday to announce the next instalment of the franchise will be filmed at Fox Studios in 2019.

Hemsworth said working on the previous Thor blockbuster in Australia had solidified his desire to shoot in his home country more often.

“Being able to stay at home and put the kids to bed in their own home as opposed to dragging them across the globe to various hotels is, as a parent, hugely important,” the Byron Bay local told reporters. “My wife’s certainly happy.”

Thor: Love and Thunder will also feature Hemsworth’s Avengers and Men in Black co-star, Tessa Thompson, and is set to be directed by New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi.

Mr Fletcher said the film was expected to contribute $178 million to the local economy and create up to 2500 jobs.

The project was secured with a $24.1 million federal government grant and support from the NSW government.

Friday’s announcement follows the news that NSW will also host filming for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The company’s vice president of physical production, David Grant, said filming both movies in Sydney meant back-to-back, continuous employment for film crews “who have not seen that for many a year”.

“Additionally as part of the support for being here, we are going to create a film trainee program for paid trainees in every department on the film,” he told reporters.

“It is our goal to find and create that next generation of Australian filmmakers.”

Outside of Thor, Hemsworth has the opportunity to pick up another role in the state after receiving an impromptu job offer during Friday’s press conference.

“Will you be in our graduate project?” a film student yelled. “Sure … meet you out back,” the actor jokingly replied.
