Ten years ago Chris Hemsworth was a struggling actor who was devastated after missing out on two big films. So what were they?

Chris Hemsworth has revealed the Hollywood blockbusters he was most disappointed not to get cast in.

The Aussie star is now a household name thanks to his role as Thor in the Marvel movies, but 10 years ago he was just a 25-year-old actor hoping for a big break.

“I got very close to GI Joe,” Hemsworth told Variety, but the role in the 2009 movie eventually went to Channing Tatum.

He also missed out on starring in another superhero franchise.

“I got very close to Gambit in the Wolverine X-Men movies,” Hemsworth said (the role went to Taylor Kitsch).

“At the time I was upset. I was running out of money. But if I played either of those characters, I wouldn’t have been able to play Thor.”

Hemsworth was initially dismissed for Thor by one of the casting directors and the part very nearly went to his brother Liam.

“I actually screen tested before Chris did,” Liam Hemsworth told news.com.au.

“We both auditioned for it. I was still living in Australia at the time. I sent a tape over for Thor and he’d (Chris) already auditioned with Kenneth Branagh who was the director of the film over in the states. He didn’t get a call back for a screen test.

“I got flown over from Australia to do it (screen test) and I had a conversation with Chris on the phone and he said, ‘You’re getting flown over to do a screen test?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah!’ He goes, ‘I didn’t get a call back.’”

Chris Hemsworth eventually got given a chance to audition one more time to play Thor in the 2011 film of the same name and the rest, as they say, is history.

In addition to his role in the Marvel movies, Hemsworth has also appeared in films including Rush, Red Dawn, In The Heart of the Sea and 12 Strong.

He also had a small role in the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot which he told Variety he was tempted to quit just before filming began.

“The night before I was shooting, I almost pulled out,” Hemsworth said.

“Three or four weeks prior, (director) Paul (Feig) said to me, ‘I’m going to write up the character. Don’t worry.’ And then I got the script and nothing had changed.”

Hemsworth decided to stay after being assured he would be allowed to improvise on set.

“I was really scared walking onto that set. I had no real plan, so I was just feeding off of them, and I just felt ridiculous. So I used that,” he said.

Hemsworth will next be seen on the big screen in Men In Black: International which hits cinemas on June 13.
