DESPITE being described as a “Bollywood-goes-Bogan car-crash” on its release in Australia last year, Brett Lee’s feature film debut, unIndian, will open on hundreds of screens across India next month, with a Middle East and US release to follow.
In giving the film half a star out of five last October, News Corp film reviewer Leigh Paatsch said of the fledgling actor, who played 76 Tests and 221 ODIs for Australia: “The likelihood of Lee delivering a passable performance was always somewhere between Michael Clarke finding a cure for the common cold, and David Warner winning the Nobel Peace Prize”.
The cultural clash rom-com, starred Lee as an English-as-a-second-language teacher, who tries to win over an Indian single mother, played by established Bollywood star Tannishtha Chatterjee. Both stars are slated to walk the red carpet at a gala premiere in India on August 19, alongside Bollywood stars Supriya Pathak, Gulshan Grover and Akash Khurana and what’s being billed as a “who’s who” of the country’s acting and cricket communities.
unIndian, an Australian and Indian co-production, was shot in Sydney and other NSW locations and some funds came from local screen body Screen NSW. It made a paltry $213,000 at the Australian box office, but its producers have high hopes for it on the cricket-mad subcontinent, where it’s due to open on 300 screens.
Distributor of unINDIAN in India and Middle East Krian Media President Mr. Ranjit Thakur said in statement: “unINDIAN is a well-made, feel good rom-com ideally suited for the Indian subcontinent. The Indian audiences in the country & in the Middle East will love Brett Lee & the film itself. Krian Pictures is proud to present this in the region. It surely adds value to our slate of films & overall positioning in the subcontinent”.
