WARNING: SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: ENDGAME
It’s already become the second highest grossing film of all time only two weeks after its release.
Avengers: Endgame has proved much more than just a smashing commercial success, with fans and critics across the board satisfied with how the story ended — despite a few tears.
But it was nearly a very different conclusion, with directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealing they had filmed an alternate ending.
Fans would remember Australian actor Katherine Langford, 23, filmed scenes for the Marvel blockbuster late last year as a mystery character, with many people left scratching their heads after realising she didn’t end up appearing in the movie.
Now it’s been revealed her character was to be the adult daughter of Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, and she was part of an alternate ending. It was cut because the Russo brothers admitted the scene didn’t test well with a trial audience.
“There was an idea that Tony was going to go into the metaphysical way-station that Thanos goes in when he snapped his fingers (in Infinity War), and there was going to be a future version of his daughter in that way-station,” Joe told the HappySadConfused podcast.
“His future daughter forgave him and gave him peace to go. The idea felt resonant, but it just was too many ideas in an overcomplicated movie.
“We showed it to a test audience and it was really confusing for them.”
Anthony added the post-production crew didn’t feel an emotional connection between Iron Man and his adult daughter.
“We didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter. It wasn’t ringing to us,” he said.
“It wasn’t resonating to us on an emotional level, which is why we moved away from it.”
In an interview with the New York Times, screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus revealed it was always the plan for Tony Stark to die and for Captain America to finally get his dance with Peggy.
Avengers: Endgame has already made more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office. If you need to catch up before the big finale, Avengers: Infinity War is available to stream on Foxtel Now.
